Marion Elizabeth Daniels

Marion Elizabeth Daniels, age 103, of Glen Mills, PA, formerly of Atlantic Beach, FL, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2023.

Mrs. Daniels was born in 1919 and spent her childhood years in Glenolden, PA. She was a proud graduate of Penn State University and remained a loyal fan of the Nittany Lions along with the Phillies and Eagles throughout her lifetime.

After graduation, Mrs. Daniels went to work for the Signal Corps in Philadelphia. The time working for the Signal Corps during World War II, was one of the most impactful times of her life. She took pride in the fact the Signal Corps was responsible for one of the most important systems used during World War II- radar. It was at the Signal Corps that she met her beloved husband, Edwin Frank Daniels, III. After the War, the family lived in Mt Airy PA where they welcomed their first born son Christopher “Kit”. In 1955 the family moved to Oreland, PA and welcomed their second son, Jonathan.

After the death of her husband Ed, Marion worked as a purchasing agent at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Northeast, Philadelphia until she retired in 1986. After retirement, Marion pursued her love of travel and song. She joined the Valley Forge Chorus, a chapter of Sweet Adelines International. She loved performing a cappella. One of the most memorable experiences of her life was performing with the 1986 chorus in international competition and winning one of the two gold medals in the chapter’s 56- year history. She recently had a surprise visit with several members of the chorus after their performance at Maris Grove. The family is grateful for the friendship and joy that Sweet Adeline’s brought to her life for so many years.

Throughout her life, travel was Marion’s passion. From vacations with Kit and Jonathan and her beloved brother, Merritt and sister-in-law Shirley, to the later years and adventures with dear friends, Mary and Dan. She loved seeing the world and vacationing with her family in Sint Maarten. She fulfilled a lifelong wish in 2006 when she took her entire family on a land and sea cruise to Alaska.

In 2001, at the urging of her dear cousin Lew Hutton, Marion moved from Bryn Mawr to Fleet Landing in Atlantic Beach, FL, The warm weather, beautiful campus and the friendly, interesting people made her want to be part of the community. She spent 17 happy years at Fleet Landing. In December of 2017, she decided it was time to come home to be closer to her family. She moved in to an independent living apartment at Maris Grove and later moved to the skilled care community, Rose Court.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ed, brother Merritt Hursh and cousin, Lew Hutton. Her sons, Christopher Daniels (DeVon) and Jonathan Daniels (Anna) and her grandchildren, Courtney Zuleger (Chad), Christopher Daniels (Emily) and Jordan Daniels (Danielle}, will miss her dearly. One of her greatest joys was being GG to her seven great grandchildren, Logan and Skylar Zuleger, Warren, Margot, Isla, Lottie and Everett Daniels. In addition, she is survived by her beloved niece Sue Boberek (Frank) and great nieces and nephews, Carol, Mark and Bud Hutton and Barbara Quigley.

The family would like to thank the many dedicated and compassionate professionals at Maris Grove, who lovingly cared for her in the last six months of her life.

I met Marion when I joined Valley Forge in 1987. She was such a friendly and caring member. I remember all the fun we had on our trip to Russia. Everyone wanted to meet her. I’m so happy that I was able to sing for her on Feb. 1st. The first thing she asked me was how Jack was.

Although we were Bryn Mawr neighbors, we didn’t connect until Marion joined Valley Forge. Even then it was a while, we were a large group. Soon Marion, Rose, Charlotte and I connected. When Marion was at Fleet Landing, I visited many times. She had the bestest friends…. Evelyn, Mary Alice, Barbara, and the best…Adelle. During the pandemic Marion’s family gave her the best gift…an iPad so she could visit with them during the lock down. Marion and I face timed since then every week, squeezing in between Jon and Kit. I will miss you my dear friend.

Marion was a happy voice among us, be it in song or in word. It was such a pleasure to travel with her and Mary, even though she never missed an opportunity to laughingly chide me for taking us in the wrong direction on a vaporetto in Venice. I truly enjoyed her sense of humor. She was and will always remain in my memory one grand lady.

Marion was one of those special ladies that only comes around once in your lifetime. She was like a second mother to Joe and I throughout our teenage years. Marion will always have a special place in my heart and I will always fondly remember her.

Marion was a once in a lifetime friend. We shared more good times and laughs in our almost sixty-year friendship than I could ever possibly count. Our mutual love of traveling, curiosity about foreign cultures and so many things kept us babbling like teenagers most of the time. Among other things, I will miss her late night calls along the lines of “hey, mare…do you remember the name of that restaurant in Madrid , I think it was Madrid, where they put a different kind of flower on the plate of each different course and there was a guy outside making beautiful pictures on the sidewalk in chalk?” And, no surprise, only one of us would be awake the rest of the night trying to remember the name of that restaurant ! I will miss her enormously, but will cherish all those memories. Love and peace to you my friend. Mary

I had the blessing of knowing Mrs. Daniels at Maris Grove. She was kind, considerate and had a great sense of humor. She would always ask how I was doing, regardless of how she was feeling. I loved hearing her stories of singing in her quartet, her travels (including the time her purse was stolen in Italy), watching Downton Abbey or the American Ninja Warriors, her family, and how she met her wonderful husband. Always a smile on her face and a twinkle in those beautiful, wise eyes. I will truly miss visiting with her, but am so grateful that our paths crossed in this life. And so to Mrs. Daniels.... May flights of angels been singing as they accompanied you home to be with and embraced by those you have loved and missed. To her family of whom she often spoke and always with such love and pride...May her memories be a blessing in your life. Mrs. Daniels was a gift. Thank you for sharing her with us in her later years.
