Lola M. Miller

Lola M. Miller (Johnson), beloved sister, mother, aunt, educator, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2025 at the age of 82. She was born in January 1943, in Wilmington, Delaware, to Whittie and Beatrice E. Johnson and was raised on the East Side of Wilmington, where her values of faith, family, and community were firmly planted.

Raised in a home shaped by love, discipline, and deep spiritual roots, Lola grew into a woman who embodied grace, compassion, and quiet strength. She was a dedicated student and graduated from Wilmington High School in June of 1961. Continuing her education, she attended Delaware State University and proudly graduated in June of 1967, an achievement that reflected her determination, intelligence, and perseverance.

Lola devoted her professional life to education. She taught at Concord High School, where she served as the Home Economics teacher, shaping the lives of countless students with practical skills, discipline, and care. After her retirement from teaching, she continued serving young people through her work with the YMCA After Care Program, where her nurturing spirit and steady guidance remained deeply felt.

A woman of lifelong faith, Lola was baptized as a child at Mother AUMP Church in Wilmington. In her later years, she was a devoted member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she found spiritual strength, fellowship, and purpose throughout her life.

In 1969, she married Clark Miller, and from that union came their beloved son, Clark Miller Jr. Being a mother was one of Lola’s greatest joys, and she poured love, guidance, and unwavering support into her son’s life.

Lola is survived by her son, Clark Miller Jr.; her sister, Marguerite Comegys; her brother, Jim Johnson; and many loving nieces and nephews, along with extended family and dear friends who will forever treasure her memory.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Whittie and Beatrice E. Johnson, and her sisters, Christine Stansbury, Dorothy Gross, and Mary Bailey.

In her final years, Lola was lovingly cared for by her niece, Eboni Fountain, along with Eboni’s husband, Chris, whose dedication, compassion, and daily support profoundly enriched Lola’s later years.

In memory of my Aunt Lola, I recall how she spoke about her students when she was a teacher before retiring. Her students loved her especially when she was teaching the cooking classes. She also taught sewing has well. Aunt Lola loved to cook and sew, and she was the one who got my mother her sister to take up sewing. Aunt Lola and my mother who's no longer here, her and Aunt Lola was always at the fabric store together, JoAnn Fabric store. Now Aunt Lola is in God's hands and with her sister's that have gone before her. Aunt Lola now you can get the rest you need, and be in loving hands your Creator and Father God. I know God will watch over your son Clark with love and protection in Jesus Name Amen 🙏🏾 🙌🏾

Lola always came into Westminster (WPC) on Fridays when I volunteered @the reception desk! She always asked for my husband, Wayne (he passed on Oct 9🙏) Then she would go into the Children’s Suite & get some crafts together for Sunday School. She worked tirelessly with Vac Bible School & the many luncheons she helped with!! She was a gracious lady & was always around to help with the children. We had taken her to & from church before she moved in with her niece. She will be missed @WPC🙏

Lola's was a life well lived. Lola cared deeply for her family, especially her beloved son, Clark. Lola touched many people with her love and her faith. I recall several times we enjoyed breakfast together at the Hollywood Grill. Lola was also in my Tuesday morning Bible Study class and could always be counted on to illuminate the passage or story we were studying. She is now safely in God's eternal care. I will miss her. Her loved ones have my deepest sympathy. In peace, Anne Gunn

I was so sad to hear about the passing of Lola Miller. I had met her through her son Clark at St. Mark's High School. We ran on the track team there and became best of friends. Clark and myself would hang out together a lot. I would spend time with Clark at their place. The three of us sometimes would have meals together and we always had great conversations. Mrs. Miller was super friendly, very kind, caring and had a great sense of humor. She was a wonderful mother to Clark and a wonderful person and friend. She raised Clark very well. My deepest sympathies and thoughts and prayers for Clark and the Miller family. Lola will always be remembered.

Pamela Wat lit a candle and writes,
I met Lola when Clark and I were in high school together. She was warm and welcoming and I always felt like she was one of those rare adults who really saw me. My memory of her house was that there were a lot of craft and sewing items and she was always working on something. It seemed to me the best way to live and now I am always working on some craft and I like to keep things that I might be able to turn into something else. I moved away after high school and when I returned 15 years later, I encountered her often at the Brandywine YMCA. I took a drawing class from her there and I told her I couldn't draw, but she wouldn't let me believe that I couldn't draw, and instead she taught me how to draw. I always admired her creativity and can-do spirit. Lola and I also crossed paths in other places around Wilmington and got to have some rich conversations about life, love, and faith. We lost touch when I moved away again, but Lola left an impression that will always be on my heart and mind. I know family meant the world to Lola and I offer my deepest condolences to Lola's family and close friends. May you find moments of peace as you grieve.
