Leo A. Long, Jr.

Leo Long, age 80, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, November 1, 2025.

A lifelong Delawarean, Leo was born in Wilmington to the late Leo A. Long Sr. and Ann Canavan Long. After graduating from Salesianum School in 1962, he proudly joined and served in the Delaware National Guard. In 1965, he married his high school sweetheart, Norma Powers Long, and together they shared 55 years of marriage until Norma’s passing in 2021.

Leo was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and colleague. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing softball, and later, he could often be found on the sidelines at his daughters’ and grandchildren’s sporting events. A passionate sports fan, Leo loved golfing and rooting for his Philadelphia teams, especially celebrating when his beloved Eagles won their first Super Bowl in 2018. After a round of golf, he cherished spending time with friends and family at Del-Vets or a favorite local spot, swapping stories and laughter. Some of his happiest moments were spent teaching his grandchildren how to fish and crab at the beach.

Throughout his career, Leo worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware and Shared Medical Systems in Pennsylvania before finishing his professional journey with the Delaware River and Bay Authority, where he served as Benefits Administrator. His time there brought him not only fulfillment but also many lasting friendships.

Leo is survived by his daughters, Tracy Long and Kelly Long; his five grandchildren, Jake, Jordan, Shane, McKenna, and Braeden; his brothers, Frank Long (Mary Ellen) and Mike Long (Kathy); as well as several nieces, a nephew, and members of his extended family.

Family and friends may visit at the Chandler Funeral Home, 7230 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707, on Friday, November 7, 9:00-11:00 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 at St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707. Interment will be private.

Leo "Paddy" will be missed. He made a lasting impression on me that I'll cherish forever. My kids loved him and will miss him. I had the honor to be part of his life, Family , Golf , and a good story were keys to a wonderful time with him. My condolences to his brothers , Mike & Frank along with his amazing daughters, Tracy & Kelly. An an Irish Blessing for my father in law. "Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace" I just know he's throwing back a few pints with Doc and Norma is shaking her head in the corner at the pub around the corner of the pearly gates.

I have known Lee since he first started to date my cousin Norma, later to become his wife, almost 60 years ago. I remember Lee playing frisbee with my younger siblings and me in Norma’s backyard. My brother Dan remembers Lee playing Legos with him instead of being with Norma and the rest of the family. Lee was such a kind, considerate, caring, and friendly person all his life. I remember him making breakfast sandwiches for Norma and me before we left on an early morning flight to Las Vegas on a girls’ trip to celebrate a milestone birthday for Norma. Even though we had told him the night before that we would just get something at the airport, he ignored us and made us breakfast. Which, of course, we happily ate. That’s the type of incredible man that Lee was. I love him and will truly miss him.
