Karen Veith died peacefully at dusk on January 19th in the loving presence of her children. Karen was 82. A longtime resident of Wilmington, Karen raised her five children, and then doted on her grandchildren, at homes in Sharpley, Centerville and Wawaset Park; her sharp eye as a collector filling each house with beauty and comfort. And she commanded a sharp wit; to know Karen as a doubles partner at Wilmington Country Club, a companion on the bleachers at a Quakers game, a fellow elder at Lower Brandywine or a student at the Academy was to know a kind friend who never missed a chance for a good laugh.
Karen Eleanor MacDonald was born in 1935 in Brockton, MA to Elsa Linea Peterson and Malcom Reed MacDonald. After graduating from Brockton High School, where she served as a class officer, Karen completed her education at Endicott Junior College. A devoted mother, Karen was a source of strength and humor to her family. She is survived by her children: Linda Glover (Bruce) of Old Greenwich, CT, David Veith of Chadds Ford, PA, Leslie Reed (John) of New Vernon, NJ, and Peter Veith (Kathy) of Wilmington, as well as eleven grandchildren: Elizabeth Veith, Stephen Veith, Anna Veith, Caroline Glover, Thomas Glover, Abigail Veith, Kersey Reed, Isabel Reed, Lindsay Reed, Eleanor Veith and William Veith. Although it was her great sorrow to have been predeceased by her beloved son, Charles J. Veith IV, memories of Chuck were always with Karen and her family.
A memorial service at Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church will be held on February 3rd, 2018, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association is suggested.
