John Davidson Newell, Jr., 82, resident of Midtown Brandywine since 1989, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2026.
Born in Wilmington, John grew up in Wawaset, attended Tower Hill and graduated from Solebury School in New Hope, Pennsylvania. He apprenticed with master photographer Willard Stewart before developing his own business. He became one of the region’s most popular wedding photographers, winning many accolades.
Family and friends will remember him best for his spirited sense of humor and his love of dogs and cats. John also loved a good argument and the ensuing laughter. John enjoyed spending time at Winterthur, taking nature photographs, gardening, caring for his dogs and cats, and watching baseball.
He is survived by his life partner of 37 years, Judy Walrath, his nieces Sara (Richard) Mathis and Laurie (Haitham) Mansour, his cousins Deborah (Bryan) Shane and Paige (Marinelle) Mullen and his cat Barley. He was predeceased by his parents, John Sr. and Betty Newell and his sister Lisa.
A celebration of life will be held later this spring. Donations in John’s memory can be made to a charity of your choice.
