John A. Abbitt

John A. Abbitt, age 98, of Hockessin, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at Cokesbury Village in Hockessin.

 

John attended Virginia Tech and graduated in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering. He spent his career with the Hercules Powder Company, later known as Hercules Incorporated.  Among his many accomplishments, he contributed to the construction of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and Dulles Airport.

 

John proudly served in the U.S. Navy near the end of World War II.

 

John was a true gentleman—kind, gracious, and deeply respected. He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by all who knew him.

 

In 1951, John married his childhood sweetheart, Anne Bing, who preceded him in death in 2016. He is survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as grandnieces and grandnephews.

    John (and Annie) were wonderful neighbors! And so much fun. And, a great tennis player. He was a competitive player, thus, our games were always long and exciting. He was always a gentleman ! On and off the courts. We will always remember him with love and affection.
