Janet Stahl Morton Baird

Janet Stahl Morton Baird, age 88, of Wilmington, DE, and Sunapee, NH, passed away peacefully at Shipley Living Nursing Home in Wilmington on Sunday, February 5, 2023.

Born in Staten Island, New York in 1934, Janet was the daughter of the late Kenneth Gee Morton and the late Flora Joan Stahl. She was preceded in death by her older brother Douglas Gee Morton. Janet graduated from Curtis High School (Staten Island, NY) and Wheaton College (Norton, MA). She also attended Brooklyn Law School. She married the late Richard L. “Dick” Baird of Portland, OR, in Staten Island, in August 1959. After living in Connecticut for several years while Dick taught at Yale University, the couple moved to Wilmington, DE where they raised their children and made many long-term friends. Janet was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church. Janet worked as a museum guide at Hagley Museum for well over 30 years and also worked as a guide at the Old Town Hall in Wilmington. She served as a Girl Scout Leader for a number of years. Janet enjoyed her gourmet and bridge clubs.

Janet and Dick had a summer home on Lake Sunapee in Sunapee, New Hampshire, where Janet enjoyed relaxing and watching the seasons of the lake as well as welcoming guests. Janet and her late husband also enjoyed traveling extensively.

Janet is survived by her son Bruce Baird and wife Robin Buckley-Baird of Delaware and her daughter Catherine “Cathy” Kusmin and husband Lorin Kusmin of Maryland, as well as by two granddaughters, Carolyn “Lynn” and Abigail “Abby” Kusmin and several cousins. She is also survived by family friend Barbara “Tia” Benson.

Funeral Services

Viewing will be on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 from Noon to 1 pm at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE followed by a graveside service at Silverbrook Cemetery at 1:30 pm. A memorial service may be held at a later date.

    A very nice tribute to a very wonderful lady. I never knew she went to law school, but I knew she was a consummate tour guide and loved showing people especially family around her world. She is greatly missed.😢❤️
