J. Michael Enyedy II

J. Michael (Mike) Enyedy II, age 87, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2023. Mike was Wilmington’s Hospital Engineer, overseeing two of the largest hospital construction projects in the City’s history, the construction of Christiana Hospital and the first major addition to Nemours Children’s Hospital.
Mike began his construction career as an officer in the United States Naval Construction Battalions, better known as the Navy Seabees. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam, followed by additional duties leading the construction of refit facilities for the Trident submarine program and ending his 20-years of active duty at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis at the rank of Commander.
Following his naval service, he joined the Alfred I. duPont Institute in 1978 to oversee the construction of a major addition to the Nemours Children’s Hospital. Following completion of the project, he joined the Medical Center of Delaware to transform a corn field in Christiana into a 700-bed hospital, which was then the largest such facility built from the ground up in the nation. After construction was complete, he continued as the Head of Facilities for the Medical Center, overseeing further expansions at both the Christiana and Wilmington Hospitals, which comprised over one million square feet of state-of-the-art healthcare facilities. He retired from full-time work at the Medical Center in 2002 and continued to provide consulting support until 2018. Mike also served on the Board of the Ronald McDonald House, managing the construction of the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, and consulted on construction projects for Delaware Hospice.
Mike was born on May 22, 1935, in Elmira, New York, and graduated from Elmira’s Southside High School in 1953. He received a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Penn State University in 1958 and an MBA from George Washington University in 1971.

Mike and I met in that " corn field" at Christiana and he " transformed" my career as well. He gave a woman a chance in the field when she most needed it. He was known for his intelligence, fairness, and kindness to all. He led with practicality, humor and dogged determination throughout his career and he taught others by example. The hospital was his other family, and he was beloved by all.

Mr. Enyedy was the best boss anyone could ask for. We worked together for 20+ years. He never asked anything of me that he wouldn't ask of himself. He was a great man who everyone liked and respected. We are all better off for knowing him.
