Harold Shaw Sanderson

Harold Shaw “Squint” Sanderson, 97 of New Castle, Delaware passed away peacefully on December 21, 2021.

Harold was born in 1924 in WIlmington, Delaware to Franklin Sanderson and Elsie May Bullock. He and his brother Thomas were raised in Wilmington. He worked as a taxicab driver there for many years before settling on a career at General Motors Corporation Boxwood Assembly. He retired from GM and remained a proud member of the United Auto Workers Local 435. Harold was also a former member of the Moose Lodge.

Harold was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed many hobbies, including carpentry, home repairs, fishing, and crabbing. He also like to spend Sundays watching football. He especially loved to spend summers at the family beach house in Fenwick Island, where he often could be found teaching the grandkids to catch crabs and cruising the bay a captain of his beloved pontoon boat, the Floppy Flounder.

Harold earned the nickname “Squint” because for most of his life his eyelids drooped, but he had that corrected as an older adult. He had an incredible sense of humor and enjoyed telling tall tales and stories to family and friends. He was always very down to earth and lived by the motto that if you can’t control something, don’t worry about it.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents and sibling, as well as three of his sons, Franklin, John, and Kent Sanderson, all of whom passed in 2021, and grandson Suksan Senakit of Florida. His beloved wife of 73 years Adele passed away shortly after in January 2022. Harold is survived by his son Thomas, with whom he lived; daughter-in-law Gail Sanderson of Wilmington; Grandchildren Beverly and Bill Knotts of Hockessin, Amy and David Kohl of New Castle, Karin and Leslie Donovan of Milford, and Kampan Senakit of Panama City, Florida; and many beloved great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service for Harold, Adele, John, and Kent on Saturday April 2, 2022 at Chandler Funeral Home, 7230 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707. Visitation will be 9:30-10:30am, with services at 10:30am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Harold’s memory to Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Easter Shore, 61 Corporate Circle, New Castle, DE 19720. www.easterseals.com/de
