George L. K. Hoh, PhD.

George L. K. Hoh, age 87, died on June 10, 2022, in Wilmington, Delaware.

He was born in Canton, China to Daisy Hoh and Reverend Dr. Yam Tong Hoh.  At the age of 5, he came to the USA as a refugee with his mother, followed 4 years later by his father.

He moved to Berkeley, California after his beloved Mother died, where he met Florence at the Church’s Chinese School. He completed his undergraduate studies from Pomona College, he earned his Doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Kansas and did his post-doctoral work from Brandeis University.  During this time, he became a naturalized citizen.

George and Florence were married by Rev. Hoh in California in 1962.  George had already started his career with DuPont in Wilmington as research chemist in the Electro Chemicals department at the Experimental Station.  Shortly after, their first son David was born.  Three years later their second son Larry was born.  George’s career moved him to downtown Wilmington and then to Chestnut Run in the Packaging and Industrial Polymers department where he retired with several patents.  He was a member of the American Chemical Society.

For hobbies, George worked on cars and was good at fixing most things around the house.  He was an active part of Boy Scout Troop 61 in the late 70’s and early 80’s; taught several merit badges; enjoyed the camaraderie of the other scout leaders.  He was a mentor and guide to many youths in and out of Scouting.  While never fond of traveling, George and Florence went to Australia and the highlight of the trip for George was his interactions with a wallaby.  He appreciated classical music and a late-night vanilla ice cream and apple pie. George was an early adopter of the 3 R’s: reduce, reuse, and recycle. He reused or repurposed many items.

George enjoyed volunteering as a driver for Meals on Wheels for many years.  He also was a past President of the Green Acres Civic Association.

George will be remembered as a patient and generous Father.  He loved to read and enjoyed sharing his wisdom with others.  His gentle spirit and thoughtful nature will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate to have known him.

He is survived by the love of his life Yim Lin (aka Florence) Hoh, his sons David (Cecilia) and Larry (Susan), his brother John Hoh as well as many nieces and nephews and their children.

Florence, David and Larry, I was saddened to hear of George's passing. George was one of the finest men that I have ever met. I was lucky enough to spend several years in the same work group availing myself of his knowledge. He was generous and kind in mentoring me and many others in our group. He was always interested in what you had to say and curious about many things. He liked solving challenging problems and could always be counted on for his advice. He was so proud of his family and we would share stories of how our children were doing. I remember when my 3-year old took a magic marker to my new beige carpeting at home. George was the one I went to for help. We went out to the "chemical" shed and selected the right solvent which cleaned it right up. I will always remember his deep voice and chuckle and that twinkle in his eyes. Deep condolences to all of you. Lori Pike

Florence and family, I was saddened to read of George’s death. I had the good fortune to meet and work with George when I transferred to Chestnut Run and the P&IP business mid-career in 1997. George was a fount of technical information and very willing to help me learn about this new-to-me business. (yes, “sharing his wisdom”) He was friendly, humorous, and hard-working. He was kidded about the piles of paper on his desk, but if you asked him a technical question or problem, he could very quickly pull out a paper or report from those piles that contained answers or suggestions. I too will remember his deep voice, chuckle, and the twinkle in his eyes. Please accept my condolences. Jim Weddell

Dear Flo and family. I am so sorry to hear about George. George was a great and delightful person to work with at Chestnut Run. I consider him to be one of the best people I have worked with during my career at DuPont. George always had a positive attitude and was a great mentor. A few years after we were both retired, I was sitting in a restaurant and heard his distinct voice and laugh, and I immediately said, "That sounds like George." I remember turning around and seeing George and Flo. We had a nice conversation and even had a laugh when I asked him if he ever completed the work on his hobby car, which I believe was a Karmann Ghia. I will always treasure these fond memories of George. Sincerely, Michael Evans
