Evelyn Loraine Walrod Lubrano

Evelyn Loraine Walrod Lubrano died peacefully in her home on February 24th 2017 due to complications from congestive heart failure and aortic stenosis. She was 89 years old.

Evelyn was born at home on her parent’s farm in Linn County, Kansas on March 28th 1927, the seventh in a family of eight children. Her parents, Jim and Nelle Walrod, were hard-working people who brought their family through the Great Depression with determination, resilience, and faith. They instilled these qualities, along with a good sense of humor, in their children, giving Evelyn the strength of character that would see her through many difficult times in her life—the most painful being the loss of two of her children at very young ages; three-year-old Patty in 1951, and eight-year-old Skipper in 1960. Evelyn graduated from Mound City High School in 1944. She met Salvatore (“Sam”) Lubrano while living and working in Wichita, KS the year after graduation. They were married in Mound City, KS on June 17, 1946, and traveled to Philadelphia, PA to begin their married life. They were married for 66 years, relocating several times during their life together—including an adventurous four-year sojourn in Sao Paulo, Brazil. After returning to the States in 1976, Evelyn pursued a variety of interests, culminating in a position at North Penn High School in Lansdale, PA , where she stayed until reaching retirement age. When Sam retired from Ford Electronics (later Visteon), he and Evelyn moved to Cocoa Beach, FL, where, as they liked to say, they enjoyed 15 years of “the good life” before relocating to Delaware to be near their son and his family.

Evelyn was an outgoing person who made friends easily. She loved to dance, garden, bowl, and play bridge. She had a lifelong passion for baseball and her two favorite teams were the Cardinals and the Phillies. She encouraged her children to do their best, pursue their dreams and lend a helping hand. Despite the losses that she suffered she remained an optimist at heart, who loved to laugh and spend time with family and friends. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy.

Evelyn is survived by three of her children, Robert Lubrano of Middletown DE, Donna Lubrano of Providence RI, and Rosalind Lubrano of Westbrook CT; her eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Salvatore Lubrano of Philadelphia, PA, daughter Lisa Coombes of Colorado Springs, CO, daughter Patricia (“Patty”) and son Steven (“Skipper”).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Evelyn Lubrano to The MOT Senior Center, 300 S Scott St. Middletown, DE 19709. (302) 378-4758 www.motseniorcenter.com
