Eugene Leslie Grimm, Esq. age 95, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on the evening of Monday, July 26, 2021. Gene was born and raised in Lamberton, Minnesota by his parents, Leslie Grimm and Olive Grimm (Rice). Gene graduated from Lamberton High School (1943) before enlisting in the United States Army during World War II at age 17. The following year his field artillery battalion was deployed to the European theatre where they fought in France and Germany before V-E Day in May 1945. He then graduated from University of Minnesota with both a Bachelor’s degree (1948) and a Juris Doctor (1950). He later obtained a Masters in Law degree in Law from the George Washington University National Law Center (1958). After being admitted to the Bar, he was recalled during the Korean War and again proudly served his country as a Captain in the United States Army. He was assigned to the United States JAG Corp in the Pentagon, in Washington DC (1950-52). He then served as a Commissioner of the United State Court of Military Appeals (1953-56), as Appellate Attorney, United States Department of Justice, (1957-60) where he argued several cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, and as General Counsel, Administration Office, U.S. Courts (1960-62). In 1962, Gene began his second career as a corporate attorney for The DuPont Company, Wilmington, DE. He worked in the General Legal Department from 1962 to 1989, first as General Counsel then as Corporate Counsel. While with DuPont, Professor Grimm also served as managing counsel for more than 15 acquisitions, divestitures, and joint ventures. While still with DuPont, Gene began his third career as a professor of law at Widener University Delaware School of Law, first as an adjunct and then as a full professor upon his retirement from DuPont. He taught law until age 80. Gene was predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years of marriage, Virginia Irene Grimm (Mead) with whom he had four children, Eugene L. Grimm, Jr., Patricia M. Grimm, Thomas C. Grimm, Esq., and John S. Grimm, Esq., six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Throughout his life Gene was a devoted parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He was elected to IHM’s first Parish Council, served as a Lector for over 40 years and, together with his wife, Virginia, were Co-Chairpersons of the Steering Committee for the 1987-1992 construction of the new Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Gene served the Diocese of Wilmington as Advocate for the Marriage Tribunal of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington; Adviser, Due Process Commission, Catholic Diocese of Wilmington; and Board member, Catholic Press of Wilmington (The Dialog). He was a founding member of the Saint Thomas More Society. He received the Msgr. Paul Taggart Award from this Society in 2010. His charitable and community activities also included service in many capacities for the Ministry of Caring and as a Board member and past Chairman, Opportunity Center Inf,. (OCI), (Delaware’s leading center for persons with disabilities). In 2007, Gene received the Marguerite Gildea Award for 30 years of charitable work for the Ministry of Caring and, in 2003, he received OCl’s Founders Award, for more than 35 years of service to disabled persons.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church 4701 Weldon Road, Wilmington, Delaware 19803. A viewing will be held at Chandler Funeral Home 2506 Concord Pike Wilmington DE 19803 on Monday, August 2 from 6-9pm and on Tuesday, August 3 at IHM from 10-11am.
