Edward L. Newman

Edward L. Newman of Londonderry, in Wilmington, DE, passed away on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.  Ed was born in Wilmington, son of the late Isadore and Rose Cohen Newman and brother of the late David Newman.

Ed was a lovely man, quiet, sensitive, kind and intelligent.  He had a long and successful career at Wilmington Trust Company, from which he retired.  He loved to read, especially biographies of public figures such as movie stars, political figures and prominent people in American history.  He frequented the library to search for the best books and enjoyed talking about those biographies which he found most interesting.

Ed was dearly loved by friends in Wilmington and his family, cousins:  Jerry Cohen and Phyllis Bloom of Los Angeles and Elaine Amir of Rockville, Maryland.

I am so sad to see this. I worked with Ed and Dave at Wilmington Trust. What a kind, gentle man. He was so encouraging to me as I began my IT career.

Since I will not be able to attend the memorial service on 8/24, I am hoping that Ed’s surviving family will have an opportunity to review this testament. Stumbling upon his obituary in the News Journal, I was sorry to learn of his passing. I had the privilege of working closely with Ed at Wilmington Trust for nine years (from 1986-1995). He served as a mentor, guide, and friend during that time. Our age difference was such that he could have been my uncle or father. We supported the DDA application and several others. I was tasked with helping to customize the IRS system and Ed was right there providing input and advice. Later, I supported the ARP system which required constant updates and tweaks. Ed and I could not get over how buggy that application was. Funny, later when my daughter was born, she would have the initials ARP. My son, also born while I was at Wilmington Trust, was given the middle name of Edward. Eventually, my cube office was located across from Ed’s. We could easily discuss work matters but during down times, we had an opportunity to chat a little about life. While I never had the opportunity to meet her, I remember his mother, Rose, being referenced many times. Ed was a very kind, introspective, insightful, philosophical, and intelligent man. He was very principled but had a dry sense of humor. In my final year at Wilmington Trust, I remembered wrestling with the decision to move on. Ed had shared that one of the best decisions he had made was leaving I believe it was Delaware Trust for Wilmington Trust. He shared that a change could present new opportunities. And that it did. I moved with my family to Milford and have had many other work experiences since. My working relationship with Ed had helped keep me tethered to that institution but he was also a reason for compelling me to try something different. Right before I left, Ed invited me to lunch at the Wilmington Trust Officers Club, then located on the top floor of Rodney Square North in Wilmington. The view was amazing, the food was great, and the company was lasting. While Ed Newman has now passed on, his influence continues within me. Thank you, Ed!
