Edith Evans Menser, 92, of Wilmington, died on Feb. 14, 2025, following a brief illness.
Born in 1932 at Wilmington Hospital, Edie’s Delaware roots ran deep and she spent most of her life in New Castle County. She grew up on East 40th Street, attended Warner Elementary, graduated from P.S. duPont High School, and earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware. A lifelong Episcopalian, she was active at the Cathedral Church of St. John, where she met and married her husband, David.
Edie’s talent for clothing and textile design was an enduring passion. She used her skills to create unique and wonderful items for family and friends. Actors in the Brandywiners Ltd. wore her costumes, and for her work she was recognized as a life member. She learned to do crewel embroidery and as a member of the Cathedral altar guild she donated many pieces to the church. She was a talented floral arranger and designed many displays for Easter and Christmas.
Other significant volunteer work included organizing alumni reunions with her college classmates, hosting and supporting dozens of American Field Service (AFS) exchange students and their families. By the time she and David retired from the program in 1997, they had helped 141 students from 54 countries in 17 public and private high schools. Closer to her home she volunteered at the Wilmington Senior Center and with Greater Brandywine Village Revitalization, Inc. She served on the board of Wilmington Design Review. She treasured her friends and family and enjoyed socializing with them on her balcony overlooking the Brandywine River.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David. She is survived by her son and daughter, Paul and Martha; her grandchildren, Laura, Benjamin, and William; and great grandchildren Madeline, David, Jacob, and Nathaniel.
