Edith Diver Lennox

Edith Diver Lennox (Edie) of Wilmington, Delaware died Tuesday evening, June 20, 2017 at the Country House at the age of 98. She was the eldest of the eight children of Frank W. Diver and Carolyn Prickett Diver of Wilmington. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Alan R. Lennox, with whom she shared 65 years of marriage, and by her son, Frank W. Lennox. She was also predeceased by five of her brothers and sisters: Carolyn (Tallman), Dorothy (Thoms), Arthur, Frank, and Franny (Burt).

She is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Higgins (Jim) of Wilmington and Anne Parlin (Chris) of Bethesda, MD. In addition, Edie leaves five grandchildren (all of whom remember her fondly as their beloved “Mimi”): Nicole Parlin Saul of Alexandria, VA, Katherine Higgins Hood of Bronxville, NY, Elizabeth B. Higgins of Chicago, IL, Amy Parlin Feldman of Berkeley, CA, and James L. Higgins of Wilmington, DE. She was also blessed with 12 great-grandchildren.

Edie was raised in Wilmington and was a graduate of Westtown Friends School in West Chester, PA, and Randolph Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, VA where she was an English literature major. Soon thereafter she met and married Alan Lennox, who was employed as a chemical engineer with the DuPont Company in Wilmington.

Edie had a life-long love of learning and read widely and deeply, often underlining passages and writing comments and questions in her books. She was an enthusiastic and celebrated cook and an avid bridge player. (She and Alan played excellent bridge together and one year won the bridge championship trophy at Greenville Country Club, a point of pride for both of them.) Edie was active in the Junior Board of Wilmington Hospital and at Westminster Presbyterian Church for many years. After Alan’s retirement from DuPont, the two of them enjoyed annual trips to Hilton Head, SC in the winter. They were able to travel extensively outside the country as well.

The family is especially grateful to the management and staff of the Country House who took good care of Mimi in her later years and to the members of Compassionate Care Hospice who provided dedicated assistance to her toward the end of her life.
