Dorothy R. Medeiros

Dorothy Rose Medeiros (Bachmurski), 94, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026.

Born in Wilmington in 1931, and raised in Hedgeville, Dorothy lived a life defined by grace, service, and unwavering dedication to others.

A graduate of Mount St. Scholastica College, Dorothy earned her bachelor’s degree in biology and later a certificate in Justice and Peace from the Maryknoll School of Theology. She began her professional life in cancer research at Hahnemann University and while attending classes to further her studies, Dorothy met her beloved husband, Dr. Robert H. Medeiros, who became a respected chemistry professor at West Chester University. Together they built a life rooted in learning, service, and devotion, raising two children and sharing decades of partnership and travel.

Dorothy devoted more than 45 years to the Catholic Diocese, running the parish outreach at St. Helena’s Church. Among her dedication to countless other community service and nonprofit organizations, she led food assistance initiatives, supported families in times of crisis, and worked tirelessly to help secure housing for those in need.

She was instrumental in founding the Martha House, now part of STEHM, expanding access to shelter and stability for women and families in the community. Dorothy also served on the board of Pacem In Terris, a grassroots organization dedicated to fostering peace around the world, as well as a member of the Wilmington Peacekeepers; a local organization focused on reducing gun violence in the community. Dorothy also participated in many local initiatives focused on improving surrounding impoverished neighborhoods.

Throughout her life, she received recognition from civic and faith-based organizations, though she believed deeply that service itself was the true reward.

In her later years, time with family became her greatest joy. She took immense pride in the generations who followed her and in the values they carry forward.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Robert H. Medeiros.

She is survived by her son, Francis H. Medeiros (Antoinette); her daughter, Annamarie Medeiros Glowiak (Stan); her grandchildren, Morgan Leopardi (Tony)Nate MedeirosMeredith Pegler (Matt), and Blaise Glowiak; and her great-grandchildren, Harley and Stella, along with many extended family members and dear friends.

Visitation will be held Sunday, March 8, 2026, from 6 PM to 8 PM at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803.  Funeral services will take place Monday, March 9, 2026, 10 AM at St. Helena’s Church, 602 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington, DE 19809. Dorothy’s life will not be measured simply by the years she lived, but by the countless lives she strengthened, uplifted, and inspired.

    Renate Flannelly writes,
Joining STEHM as a board member six years ago I was privileged and humbled to meet Dorothy. Her dedication to social justice and housing for individuals experiencing homelessness was apparent immediately. I was impressed by her energy and zeal, tenacity and knowledge about the state of programs available, and her abundant kindness. STEHM would not exist without Dorothy and the other dedicated founders working tirelessly to make it a reality 40 years ago. Dorothy will be sorely missed. As a member of the board, I will continue to honor her and think of her as I carry her work forward. May Dorothy Rest In Peace.
