Dorothy May Wooster

Dorothy M. Wooster of Hockessin, passed away in her sleep on May 8, 2021 at age 94.

Dorothy, also known as Dot or Dottie, was born in Charlottesville, VA  to the late Jason I. Eckford and Elizabeth D. Eckford

She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Harley K. Wooster.  She is survived by her children, Elaine, Keith, Elizabeth, 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

She graduated from Lane High School in Charlottesville, attended Mary Washington College and continued at the University of Virginia during WWII when  women were allowed to study nursing or education. She graduated with a degree in mathematics education and went on to teach high school math in Virginia.  Some of her students were older GIs returning from the war.

She met and married her husband in Charlottesville but later they moved to the Wilmington, DE area.

She was an active member of Pennisula-McCabe United Methodist Church in the choir, the Seidel Couples class, Methodist Women’s Society and taught in the church Pre-School.

She also taught at H.B. duPont Middle School. In her later years, she volunteered helping English language learners.

She was a member of PEO and for many years sang with the Blue Rock Chorus.

Skiing began as a family activity but a membership with the Wilmington Ski Club had her still skiing into her 80s. As an avid gardener, gardening kept her busy during the growing season.  Sailing on the Chesapeake Bay was an activity she enjoyed with her husband for many years.  Travel was a big part of her life, having traveled much of the United States and visited many countries.

    Julie Drake writes,
Dottie was my preschool teacher back in the early 1970s. I was fortunate enough to reconnect with her a few years ago when visiting family in DE. We talked a bit about our preschool experiences because I became a preschool teacher myself after leaving high school when my own children were small. She was an inspiration to me.

Keith I'm so sorry to hear about your Mom. I would often hear your Mom working in the garden when I was working outside up the hill. Some of my fondest memories were skating on the pond after your Dad had checked the ice. We were fortunate kids with great parents and a wonderful place to grown up. I'm very sorry for your loss.
