David H. Jones, age 76, passed away in his long-time home in Townsend DE on March 11, 2021. David was born in Washington, D.C. in December of 1944, to Richard L. Jones and Dorothy Drexel Walsh Jones, of Wilmington, DE. His life spanned the public’s emerging awareness of living with disabilities. David had a lifelong love of listening to records, the radio, swimming, and being at the beach.
As a child, David attended Delaware Day School, established in the 1950s for children with disabilities. In the 1970s, David became a regular attendee at EasterSeals and Camp Fairlee participating in their evolving and now wide array of programs and activities for adults with intellectual disabilities. David retired in 2017 after more than 40 years of attendance. His mother was a pioneering activist parent from the moment David’s disability was identified when he was a toddler. In recognition of her effectiveness and lifelong advocacy for “those who couldn’t speak for themselves,” EasterSeals established the annual Drex Jones Volunteer Award.
David was preceded in death by his father, Dick, his mother, Drex and his brother Ellis W. Jones (survived by Sheryl (Cain) Jones), formerly of Dover, DE and Vero Beach, FL. He is survived by his siblings, Aidan D. (Kathleen Dellert) and Kevin W. Jones (Laurel Pratt), and Sarah (Jones) McCarthy (Jerry McCarthy), ten nieces and nephews, and several great nephews and nieces. David is also survived by members of his Cosner Family who welcomed him into their home in 1994 to whom the Jones Family owe enduring heartfelt gratitude.
Donations in David’s memory can be sent to Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore via www.easterseals.com/de or Attn: Online Giving Coordinator, 61 Corporate Circle, New Castle, DE 19720.
