David C. Rittenhouse

A lifelong resident of Wilmington, David C. Rittenhouse entered life eternal on May 9, 2018. He was born to Charles A. and Romayne H. Rittenhouse, and graduated from Wilmington Friends School, William and Mary College, and Christopher Wren Law School at William and Mary. After college, he served in the U.S. Army for two years. He had a 31-year career as an attorney and Senior Vice President in the Trust Department at the Delaware Trust Bank. He was an active member of Emmanuel Orthodox Presbyterian Church and was also a volunteer with the YMCA and Fort Delaware.

In 1953, he married Barbara J. Alabaster, with whom he had three children, Lynn (John Green), David (Mary Kearns), and Kay (Tim McDonald), whom he leaves behind to mourn his loss. He had nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia A. Rittenhouse.

In 1974, he married Mary Cleeve Ewing, and they enjoyed 43 years together exploring Delaware and traveling to Canada for the Shaw Festival. During the summers, they relished their vacations in Rehoboth Beach. David and Mary Cleeve also spent many happy hours with Mary Cleeve’s daughter, Anne Ewing, and son, Ty Ewing, Ty’s wife June, and their son Lincoln (Karen).

One of his favorite past-times was hunting with his son David, and they frequently brought home wild birds for the family table. He was also a skilled marksman and won many trap-shooting awards at the Aurora Gun Club where he was a member. Once he took Lynn and Kay trap-shooting with him. Lynn hit only two pigeons, and both she and Kay grumped about the tremendous kick of the rifle.
