Cornelia Stabler Canby

Cornelia Stabler Canby, (Cornie) longtime resident of Stonegates, Greenville, Delaware died Friday, January 13, 2017 at the age of 92. She was born in Wilmington, Delaware to the late W. Laird and Jane Ramsay Stabler. She graduated from The Baldwin School and attended Sarah Lawrence College. Her college years were cut short when she travelled cross country to San Diego to marry her fiancĂ©, naval lieutenant John Hamill Canby before he shipped out. They were married on December 7, 1943 and celebrated 62 years together before Jack’s death in 2005.

Cornie was a loving mother and grandmother and most happy when her family was gathered together at holidays and for their annual trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. During her life, she enjoyed many friendships that grew from her passion for traveling, playing golf and playing bridge. She also enjoyed reading, needle point and crossword puzzles. Cornie will be remembered for her warmth and kindness, generosity and grace. She spent her last few months in Stonegates Healthcare and her family is grateful for the wonderful care and comfort provided.

She was a lifelong Episcopalian and at her death a member of Christ Church Christiana Hundred. She is survived by her sister, Caroline Applegate, sister-in-law Margaretta Stabler, daughter Nancy Hawfield, sons William Canby (Kathe) and Laird Canby (Kathy), grandchildren Kathryn Frame (David), Ramsay Hawfield (Kristina), John Canby (Ansley), Margaret Canby, Travis Canby, Rebecca Canby and Loren Canby, and her grandchildren Nicholas, William and Charles Frame; Sydney and Alexa Hawfield; Anne and Olivia Canby as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, Merritt View, 383 Main Avenue #5, Norwalk, CT 06851.

Funeral Services

A reception will be held at Stonegates, 4031 Kennett Pike, Greenville, Delaware on March 18, 2017 at 12:00 PM. Interment will be private at the Northwood Cemetery, Downingtown, Pennsylvania.
