Chester L. Roberts, Sr.

Chester L. Roberts, Sr., age 87, passed away at his home in Wilmington surrounded by his loving family on November 2, 2017.

Born in Coatesville, PA to Grant and Mabel Townsley Roberts, he proudly served in the 11th Airborne Division as a paratrooper accumulating 34 jumps. After military service, he joined the City of Wilmington Police Force serving as a member of the first K-9 Corps, an Expert on the Pistol Team, Radio Room Sargent and retiring after 20 years of service. Moving then to 20 years as Building Engineer at Sears.

A humble, private man, our beloved Daddy/“Pop” and Mom-Mom created a legacy, “Roberts Roost”, in the PA mountains where he found peace and family gatherings were his greatest joy. He could spin a tale, fix anything, and play a mean game of Pinochle. The one to turn to in a crisis, steadfast in his integrity, direct about his feelings, and passionate about his loved ones. A proud American who displayed his flag with honor, he was a member of the FOP, Granite Corinthian Masonic Lodge #34, NRA, and the Genealogical Society. He enjoyed learning, history, maps, hunting, nature, giving rides on his precious tractor and was very proud of his Pound cake! He lived well, and loved a lot!!

Married for 62 years to his forever love, Janet Johnson Roberts, together they raised three children, Chester L. Roberts, Jr (Ashley), Robin Ryan (Neil) and Randee Tobin (Tom). Predeceased by his parents, wife Janet, daughter and son-in-law Robin and Neil Ryan and nine siblings; he is survived by his two children, eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and his sister Ruth Grimm; as well as many family and friends.

To Chet's family: My deepest condolences to all of you on behalf of my family. Chet was one of the kindest, nicest, honest person I have met in my lifetime. I worked at Sears with Chet for most of his 20 years there at the Market Street Store. He was loved and respected by all who knew him, he will be greatly missed and remembered. Always had a smile on his face. He was a PATRIOT and spoke fondly of his family always. Hoping the memories you made with him will stay in your heart forever as a reminder of the great person you were fortunate to have in your family.
