Charles Raymond Ginnard

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Charles Raymond Ginnard, resident of Hockessin, Delaware, age 75. Chuck was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather; he loved summers on Lake Michigan and found joy in the skies as an avid recreational pilot.

Chuck was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1947, the son of Catherine & Raymond Ginnard, and the second of eleven children. It was in Detroit that Chuck met Christine, his high school sweetheart. They began dating in 1964 and married in 1969, spending 53 loving years together.

In 1969, Chuck graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from Wayne State University, and accepted employment as an Analytical Chemist with DuPont’s Central Research Department in Delaware. Throughout his 40-year career at DuPont, Chuck was regarded as a leader and supportive colleague. His ever-present safety-first mentality — and reminders to wear eye protection — will never be forgotten.

Chuck and Chris spent summers “Up North” in Suttons Bay, Michigan where they built their retirement cottage on the water; a getaway where they enjoyed beach bonfires, fishing, stargazing and time with family.

Chuck earned his recreational pilot’s license in 1973, logging many hours in Cessnas, navigating the world above the clouds. He was a long-standing member of the Aircraft Owner and Pilots Association (AOPA) and the Salem Aero Club, serving as the Salem Aero Club’s president and treasurer at different times during his 30+ years of involvement. He was a frequent volunteer and coach for the Delaware Science Olympiad and YMCA Adventure Guides, spending many hours with his children and nurturing a love for science.

Chuck is survived by his wife Chris; daughter Kelly; daughter Janet, and her husband Ben; son Matthew, and his wife Brooke; grandchildren Bennett, Carson, Rhys, Nia, Ramona, and Simon. He is preceded in death by his daughter Lynne Kathleen.

Dear Chris and family. It was a fun time when Chuck and everybody else was doing the boxing up at Jay’s. We remember how much fun Chuck was having beating the heavy bag during our workouts. The only good thing is, if we did not have Parkinson we would have never met the both you. We love you and pray that Our Lord and Savior will bless you and draw you closer to Him. Rosemarie and Fred.

Scott and Michelle Castle and family writes,
We will miss Uncle Chuck greatly. He was a kind, gentle, and patient soul. We enjoyed the many long summer visits Up North, campfires, laughs and memories shared. Growing up, I have so many happy memories of Uncle Chuck taking all of us on boat rides to get ice cream in Omena, swimming at the sand bar ("leach beach"), and too many other special memories to name here. Later, we brought our children to your summer home to share some of those same memories with them. Uncle Chuck and Uncle Bob taught our Lilly how to catch pretend butterflies and our boys how to whistle through grass. It's the simple things that I now treasure the most. Our heartfilled condolences and love go out to Aunt Chris, Kelly, Janet, and Matthew and their families. Love and prayers, Michelle and family

Dear Chris, Kelly, Janet, and Matt, I have good memories of seeing your dad at Yorklyn Pool. He had a great smile. He introduced Vince to Indian Guides and Princesses, and was beyond generous taking Colleen to Michigan for 3 weeks one summer. May all the good times and memories sustain you as you grieve. Rest in Peace, Chuck. Julie Maguire

We got to know the Ginnard family through the Y-Guides. Chuck was a great leader among our group of families—a kindhearted and caring father whose love and sense of fun was felt by all the children. We also crossed paths on the baseball field at Piedmont and enjoyed being coaches and team parents. It’s sad to lose this great guy so soon.

Heartfelt condolences to the Ginnard family on their loss. Chuck was above all a very genuine person who deeply cared for all of his employees at DuPont and took exceptional steps to learn so much (staying up through nights to man the beam line at Argonne National Labs). It was people like him that made DuPont such a great place to work. My very sincere condolences to the Ginnard family.

Chuck was an extraordinary colleague during my time in DuPont. Smart and efficient, sure, but also a genuinely kind and warm friend. His fair-minded coaching of our diverse Ex Station softball league team stands out as a sign of the kind of manager he was. My deepest sympathy to the Ginnard family.
