Catherine (Kit) Williams Kallal, age 95, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on November 4, 2018.
Born in 1923, into a family of 9 children in Chicago Heights, IL, Kit received her bachelor’s degree from St. Xavier University in Chicago and her master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois, where she met her husband of 62 years Robert (Bob) J. Kallal.
Kit and Bob spent their early years of marriage in Boston, where she helped support Bob through graduate school. When Bob joined DuPont, they moved first to Wilmington; then Orange, TX; Charleston, WV; and ultimately back to Delaware. Kit was a mother of five, a community activist and a science teacher. She taught at Delaware Technical Community College.
Throughout her 56 years in the greater Wilmington area, Kit was involved in community organizations and charities, contributing her time and energy to the League of Women Voters, the American Association of University Women, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the Girl Scouts of America, the Ministry of Caring, the Academy of Life Long Learning and the Foster Care Review Board. She was a parishioner at St. Mary Magdalene Church for 45 years and St. Joseph’s on the Brandywine for the past 11 years.
Kit is survived by her five children: Virginia Kallal of High Rolls, NM, Cathy Kallal, her husband Maurice Lemon of Evanston, IL John Kallal of Voorhees, NJ, Diane Osan, her husband Garry of Houston, TX, Robert Kallal, his wife Alyssa of Longmont, CO, six grandchildren: Adam Freeman, Paul Lemon; Stephanie Osan, Emily Osan, Miles Kallal, Ellery Kallal, granddaughter-in-laws: Jessica Miller and Marilu Sierra Lemon, and her grandson-in-law: James VanHooser and great grandson Harry Freeman. She is also survived by five of her sisters: Margaret Asprey, Lydia Chadwick, Rose Etzkorn, Sally Lemker, and Sue Hartenbach. Her brother-in-laws Robert Carter and Al Lemker, and sister-in-law Kathleen Mannion.
Kit was predeceased by her husband Bob Kallal, her brother Grant Williams, sisters Francis Williams and Dorothy Carter, and her grandson Matthew Freeman.
