Charlotte “Mac” L. Garvine

Charlotte Maxine “Mac” Ludwig Garvine, age 93, of Talleyville, DE passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Wednesday March 29, 2023.

Born in Mooresville, NC, she was the only child of Willie Inez Hartman Ludwig and John Ludwig.  While growing up in Elkin and Newton, NC she helped out in her father’s restaurants and ice cream parlor. Charlotte was valedictorian of Elkin High School and graduated from Duke University in 1950 in 3 ½ years with a bachelor’s Degree in Economics. The year 1950 was important for Charlotte as, in addition to graduating from Duke, she got her first job at Gibbs Corporation and married Richard Earle Garvine.  She also worked at Erwin Mills as an accountant for five years.

After moving to Georgia, Florida, and New Jersey, Charlotte and Richard settled in Delaware, bought a home in 1961, and remained there for the rest of their lives.  She was an avid gardener and member of the Green Acres Garden Club, which created and cared for the gardens at The Mary Campbell Center, a facility caring for the needs of people with disabilities.  Charlotte loved sewing and was an accomplished seamstress. She also enjoyed embroidery, knitting and crocheting and watching movies when she wasn’t reading from her large library of history, mystery and science fiction books.

She is predeceased by her beloved husband of 49 years, Richard.  Charlotte is survived by her five children: Richard E Garvine Jr., Ph.D.  (Barbara) of Miami FL; Susan G. Laager (John) of Chester Springs, PA; Clifford F. Garvine (Diana) of Monroeville, NJ; William R Garvine of Talleyville DE; and Laura Anne Garvine of Middletown, DE,  along with their five grandchildren Andrea, Chrissy, Eric, Brian and Robert and three great- grandchildren Anthony, Joey and Dominick.
