Ann “Colleen” Mulhern

Ann “Colleen” Mulhern (Pope), age 70, of Wilmington, Delaware passed away peacefully with friends by her side after a long battle with Dementia on March 10, 2023.

Colleen was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, Retired Wilmington City Fire Chief, John P. (Sean) Mulhern Jr., her parents, Richard H. Pope Sr. and Margaret Mary (Gretta) Sice Pope. She is survived by her daughters, Felicia Marie Pope (Will Rosen) and Victoria Leann Pope (Matt Lo), a granddaughter, Abigail Samantha Rosen, and her brother, Richard H. Pope Jr. (Avis) and her sister-in-law, Kathleen (Mulhern) Tattan (Bill) of Hampton, NH, a niece, nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Colleen graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She was a retired teacher from the Christina School District of Delaware. Colleen was a beautiful, vibrant, quick witted, funny woman who always made those around her laugh. She was a dedicated teacher whose humor flowed into her love of teaching. Many of her students truly respected and admired her. She loved to be with friends and co-workers and often entertained them in her beautiful home.

Colleen truly loved life and was an adventurer at heart. She traveled to many countries in her early adult life eager to learn about different cultures and customs. Those who knew her well know that her greatest hobby was shopping. Each purchase was like finding treasure for Colleen. She was always on the hunt for that special antique that would look just so in her beautiful home, that outfit for work, a special occasion, or just to look nice for everyday life as she greeted people each day.

Colleen was a wonderful friend and colleague. She was always the first to extend a compliment and the first to tell you a joke to make you giggle. Our lunches together will forever hold a special place in my heart. Her extensive knowledge of places around the world added so much excitement to her Social Studies classes at Gauger. She was a joy to be around, especially when you had to tell her to behave. I am glad she is reunited with Sean. She was so lucky to have a friend so kind and warm-hearted to protect her as she slipped away. Thank you for all you did for Colleen and my deepest sympathies to you for your loss. With love and comfort, Peg

My heartfelt prayers to the family. I worked with your mother at Bancroft School for a year, I was the principal. She was a true delight and loved her students. Always professional and caring. May her spirit remain in your hearts and minds today. She certainly left a legacy and hard shoes to fill. Reflect on her love for others and you can not go wrong. Be encouraged today.🙏🏽💕🙏🏽

I am just learning of Mrs. Mulhern’s passing, but wanted to leave my condolences for her family. Mrs. Mulhern was my 5th grade teacher and left a huge impact on me as a student. She was kind, and patience, and truly made a difference in the lives of those around her. I am a teacher myself now, and think of her from time to time when I am creating my own lessons or classroom management plans (or when I see a Talbots!). So sorry for your loss, and thank you for sharing her with all of the students whose lives she touched.

I went to search for you to find an address so I could write you a letter and let you know that you were my favorite teacher I’ve ever had and it truly makes me sad to learn of your passing. Your picture is so beautiful! You were my 5th grade teacher at Bancroft year 2002-2003, you have no idea how you saved my life and all these years later at 30 years old, back in school with 3 kids of my own I often find myself telling them stories about you or our class. I wish I would have tried to reach out sooner but if anyone in your family is reading this I just want you to know that this woman was an amazing woman and I feel blessed to have been her student.

Colleen, I was so privileged to have known you. The time last I saw you, was in your home for a Christmas party. You always paid attention to detail. I remember when we worked together at Pomeroy's. You were always a funny lady. And when we went shopping at the mall. I will always remember you. Hope you are in Heaven and resting.
