Auden James Pigford of Newark, Delaware, and Landenberg, Pennsylvania, died accidentally on August 17, 2022. He was 14 years old.
Auden attended Newark Charter School from kindergarten and was a rising freshman in the graduating class of 2026. His natural, deep curiosity and focus made him a star student, especially in science and math. He was drawn to marine biology, engineering, and mechanics. From a very young age, his memory was incredible. He loved puzzles and riddles, games, machines, and escape rooms. He loved solving problems and unlocking codes, and could always “figure it out.”
The name Auden means “Old Friend” in Old English, and he lived up to his name. He made friends easily with his unpretentious, easygoing nature. He was an empathetic listener and shared confidences that his friends will never forget. He had patience and determination that made him fully present whether giving advice or participating in life’s adventures. His friends were deeply important to him and his newly long arms gave the longest, most incredible hugs.
His beautiful blue eyes were always wide open and his life was packed with many adventures, experiences, and joy. He was carefree and up for anything, anytime. He loved being outside, exploring and feeling the world around him. He was absolutely fearless. He went fast at every opportunity – on jet skis, snowboards, his motorcycles, four wheeler, skateboards and anything else with wheels. He climbed trees, rock faces, and many ropes courses. He jumped from rocks, cliffs, and a 50-meter bungee platform (twice). He visited 26 states, 18 national parks, London, Australia, the Bahamas, St. Kitts, and went scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef. Auden recently started playing guitar and was forming a band with his friends.
Atomic. Ajax. Awesome.
Auden is survived by his mother, Jennifer Hallnan; father, Ashley Pigford; stepmother, Kimberly Baird; stepsister, Genevieve Radich; grandparents, Patricia and Robert Pigford; Katharine Hallnan; James and Cynthia Hallnan and Francis; aunts, Sheree and Paula; uncles, Rob and George; cousins, Grady and Tanner; and many, many friends. Auden will be lovingly remembered and forever missed.
