Dorothy Thompson Pyne, age 96, passed away on March 15, 2017. She was the daughter of Raleigh James Thompson and Emma Sullivan Thompson.
Dorothy was born and raised in the Wilmington area. She was a graduate of Conrad High School and the University of Delaware. Although her course of study destined her to become an elementary teacher, her love of music and drama led her to act and direct many of the University’s E52 productions. Dorothy’s 27-year career in education included 10 years in the Wilmington School District, and the remaining years with the Brandywine School District. She held leadership roles in Delta Kappa Gamma (honorary education sorority) and American Association of University Women.
Dorothy’s energy and spirit were evident in all her endeavors. With her family, she enjoyed summers in Fenwick Island. With her husband, John, she traveled the world. Whether playing Bridge, singing with the Willow Valley Chorus or swimming laps in the pool, she maintained an active lifestyle. Nothing pleased her more than to entertain her grandchildren with a piano medley of Christmas Carols.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 74 years, John Allen Pyne; her children, Dr. John (Jack) Allen Pyne, Jr. and wife Susan of Fenwick Island, DE; Janice Trainer and her husband Stephen of Hockessin, DE; grandchildren: Stephanie (Barry) Messinger, Lindsay (Kyle) Lucas, Julie Pyne, David (Amy) Pyne, Allison (Jason) Landry, Jeffrey (Kathi) Blair, Jason (Lori) Blair; and 13 great grandchildren.
