Harvey S. Eckell, age 76, passed away August 13, 2021. Harvey was born in Philadelphia, the oldest child of Alvin and Sara. He was a proud graduate of Bartram High School and attended Drexel University where he majored in accounting. Harvey was also a graduate of Gratz college.
Harvey married his wife in 1967; they soon moved to Newark Delaware where they spent 49 wonderful years surrounded by a fantastic community of friends. A son was born in 1974. They moved to Wilmington in 2020.
Harvey and his wife owned Newark Newsstand and Volume II Books. He finished out his career at Wilmington Trust.
Harvey loved to travel and loved all kinds of music & Broadway Theater. He especially enjoyed Philadelphia Orchestra concerts. He was a Ruby Life Master bridge player. He was active in Temple Beth El and was a past treasurer and President of the congregation. He was twice voted Man of the Year. But his greatest love was his family. Whether it was watching Lee’s baseball games and tennis matches or attending his granddaughter’s dance recitals and softball games or watching the Phillies, Eagles, Sixers, or Flyers with his family, he was happiest in their presence.
Harvey is survived by his loving wife and best friend Arlene; his son and his pride and joy Lee; Lee’s wife Melinda, who he loved like a daughter, and his granddaughter Payton, who forever will be “his brown eyed girl”. He is also survived by a sister, Aline Miller of Poughkeepsie, NY., brothers and sister in laws, nieces, nephews, wonderful friends, and his grand dog Baxter James.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. at the Jewish Community Cemetery, 401 Foulk Rd., Wilmington. Casual attire. There will be a visitation at the late residence-2nd floor- on Tuesday evening from 6-9 P.M.
