Dr. Charles Francis Reinhardt

Charles was born in Spring Grove, Indiana, in 1933 to Charles and Frances Reinhardt and was raised in Indianapolis. He graduated from Warren Central High School and Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and met his future wife, Linda, while she attended nearby DePauw University. They were married in Illinois in 1956.

After earning his Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1959, Charlie completed an internship at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana, and served as a medical officer in the United States Air Force at Amarillo Air Force Base in Texas. He then completed a residency in public health at The Ohio State University School of Medicine, specializing in occupational medicine and toxicology.

In 1966, Charlie began his career at The DuPont Company’s Haskell Laboratory of Toxicology and Industrial Medicine, where he later served as laboratory director. Throughout his career, he held leadership positions in national organizations, including the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) and the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council. He retired from DuPont in 1996, remaining active in his profession for many years.

Above all, Charlie was a loving and devoted husband and father. He and Linda settled in Wilmington, Delaware, where they raised their four children: Amy, Jeff, Meg, and Jane. Charlie prioritized family time—supporting everyone in school, sports, scouts, and church, and taking annual summer beach vacations where the family gathered as it grew.

Charlie and Linda enjoyed many shared hobbies, including gardening, tennis, concerts, ballroom dancing, and travel. As a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, he served as a deacon and elder and participated in local and international mission work, including a trip to Africa.

In retirement, Charlie lived in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and most recently at Kendal at Longwood in Kennett Square.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; his four children and their spouses: Amy (Chuck), Jeff (Melinda), Meg (Don), and Jane (Matt); six grandchildren: Kate (Travis), Michelle (Dylan), Christian (Alli), Emma, Adam (Kirsten), and Andrew (Carly); and three great-grandchildren.
