Rose Lucille (Murray) Oakes, age 95, formerly of Leawood, KS, Alva and Avard, OK passed away peacefully (after a short few months of illness) on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 at the Brackenville Care Center in Hockessin, Delaware.
Lucille was born in 1930 in Avard, OK as the (fourth) youngest child of Lester P. and Rose A. Murray.
As a child she loved to roller skate and play jacks, she fondly remembered hauling water in cream cans with a wagon pulled by Pete and Jack, their dogs. She, however, hated gathering the cow for milking. She attended Avard School and graduated High School.
After graduation she married Winfred Dean (Bud) Oakes and moved to Alva.
She was a stay-at-home mom to their children, Carolyn, Danny, Gary and Terry whom she actively supported in various activities including girl and cub/boy scouts. Later in life she enjoyed traveling and visited over 30 states including Hawaii. “Not bad for a little girl from Avard who grew up without electricity and running water”.
Lucille is preceded by her parents, her siblings & their spouses, her husband (Bud) as well as her late Son-in-Law, Larry Nicholson.
She is survived by her children, Carolyn (Oakes) Nicholson of Mi, Dan & Suzie Oakes of KS., Gary Oakes of DE. and Terry Oakes of AK.
She is additionally survived by her grandchildren and their partners, Shawn & Meg Nicholson, Jason & Cassi Nicholson and Amanda & Ben Mitchell (of MI), Daniel & Morgan Oakes, Brandon & Theresa Oakes (of KS) Jon and Hanna Oakes (of LA), BJ & Mary Oakes, Michael Oakes (of OK) , Devin Oakes & Rachel Briggs (of PA), as well as Adam & Amy Kennedy (of KS.)
She will also be loved and remembered by her many great grandchildren and her lifelong friend and double cousin, Shirley Haltom.
Services will be held privately at a date to be determined.
We’d like to extend a thank you to the Dr’s, Nurses, and staff of both Christiana Hospital and Brackenville Care Center for their care and support.
