Melissa Lynn (Beem) Kerr embodied the phrase “A Life Well Lived.” She spent her life caring for her family, friends and others in life and at work, enjoying people’s company with a good drink, and maximizing her time in the water and sun. Melissa was many things to many people – a daughter, a big sister, a wife, a mother, a nurse, a friend, a mentor. Throughout her almost 71 years of life, she touched countless lives, contributed greatly to her community, and brought endless joy to all. Melissa passed away in hospice care in Wilmington, Delaware, on Sunday May 10, 2026, Mother’s Day, 1 day short of her 71st birthday. As a faithful Christian, she is at peace in Heaven.
Despite her years on the East Coast, Melissa’s southern drawl would come through when she’d “correctly” pronounced her birthplace of Louisville, Kentucky, with just a slur of syllables. She moved around several states growing up as her dad, David Beem, rose the corporate ladder at General Electric, but stayed in Pennsylvania after graduating Swarthmore High School to attend college.
Melissa obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Widener College, where she met her best friend and husband, Thomas Kerr. They were married her senior year in 1978. Tom and Melissa bought their first house in Wallingford, Pennsylvania, where they had two daughters, Kaitlyn and Stacey. As much as she loved her family, Melissa also loved all of their pets – dogs, cats, ponies and horses – and was affectionately known as “the Treat Lady.”
While raising two beautiful, intelligent daughters, Melissa worked full time for 40+ years as a registered nurse. Melissa began her nursing career at Delaware County Memorial Hospital and then moved to Crozer Chester Medical Center into one of the most challenging departments – the Burn Treatment Center – where she worked for 14 years. Here Melissa’s talent shined – her ability to stay focused, think, and work in high stress environments. She continued to use her “game on” skill when she moved to Crozer’s Level 1 Trauma Center, followed by Case Management, the Cath Lab and the GI Lab. After 34 years at Crozer, Melissa then moved to Lancaster General Hospital as a Trauma Case Manager and a Palliative Care Nurse.
When both daughters were in college, Tom convinced Melissa to sell their home in Rose Valley for his dream to purchase a small horse farm in Southern Chester County. Melissa agreed on one condition – she got to pick retirement. After over a decade of farm life, Melissa got to live her dream – to retire in paradise in Kauai, Hawaii. Tom and Melissa had fallen in love with the Garden Island while vacationing on an anniversary trip. Despite being retired in paradise, the ever-hard worker continued her career as a part-time nurse caring for special needs children in Hawaii Public Schools for her “beer and chips money” as she called it. While living in Kauai, Melissa maintained her die-hard love and support of the Philadelphia Eagles – Go Birds!
Melissa lived some of her best years in Kauai, enjoying the beach and water aerobics, serving as a Deacon in the Hanapepe Hawaiian Congregational Church, becoming a Lion in the Koloa Lions Club, and joining then being named a Director in Zonta, an international professional women’s organization empowering women through service and advocacy.
Melissa had an immense impact on everyone she encountered – family, friends, co-workers and patients. She will be extremely missed by hundreds of people on the Mainland and in Kauai. To honor her life in both locations, her family plans to hold Celebrations of Life in the Greater Philadelphia area and in Kauai later this year. Details will be posted on Melissa’s Facebook page.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks to honor Melissa’s giving spirit by making a donation to the Zonta Club of Kauai, where a college scholarship fund will be established in her memory for young women pursuing a nursing career. Please watch Melissa’s Facebook page for a coming link to make a donation or contact a family member for details.
