Vera Schock

Vera (Wacker) Schock, age 86, passed peacefully and comfortably into the Kingdom of Heaven on Wednesday, March 24, 2021.

She was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, glioblastoma, at the end of January and spent her final days on earth as she would have wished, at her Tybrook home of nearly 60 years, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family and friends. Vera, a Volga German, was born in Schöntal, Russia in the Ukraine in 1935 to Eugenie Scheifele and Friedrich Wacker. During WWII Vera’s father was exiled to Siberia and never heard from again. Vera’s mother along with an aunt and four siblings were re-patriated to Germany traveling through a war-torn Europe ending up in Berchtesgaden and eventually settled in Frankenthal. Vera eventually moved to Ingolstadt, Germany.

In the summer of 1955 at the age of 20, Vera came on her own to America traveling through Ellis Island. She lived near friends and relatives in Florida and New Jersey until she met and married Simon, her husband of 57 years. Simon and Vera met at a picnic in New Jersey hosted by a mutual family friend from the old country in Russia.

Vera was proud of her German heritage but equally proud of becoming an official citizen of the United States in 1972.

Vera was a talented seamstress who enjoyed her craft. In her early years, she worked for numerous high end dress makers and clothing manufacturers in New York, New Jersey, Florida and Delaware. After getting married she left the work force to become a dedicated homemaker while continuing to sew for private clients who loved her work, particularly her attention to detail. She was a longstanding member of the Delaware Sängerbund (German Club) where she enjoyed being a part of the singing group. She attended Zion Lutheran Church and loved just working at home in her flower garden. Along with her family, Vera traveled most of the United States and Canada as well as returning to Germany on numerous occasions.
In addition to her parents, Vera was predeceased by her sisters, Olga Yoder and Leontine Pusch as well as her brother Johann.

Besides her husband Simon whom she supported selflessly in his endeavors, Vera is survived by her two sons and their wives: Rudolf and Anne of Oxford, PA, and Robert and Amy of Wilmington, DE as well as her beloved grandsons Michael Chaffin, Coyle Reice and Noah Reice. She is also survived by her sister Martha Kwasniak and numerous nieces and nephews who treasured her kind, sweet nature.

The Schocks would like to thank the medical staff of Christiana Care as well as Seasons Hospice, especially Weedor, for their support and caring during the last weeks of Vera’s life. They are also particularly grateful for the loving support of Vera’s dear friends Inge and Lore.

There will be no services and in lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation in Vera’s name to either the American Brain Tumor Association, https://give.abta.org/ or Seasons Hospice Foundation, https://seasonsfoundation.org/donate-today/

My thoughts and prayers are with Simon, Bobby and Rudy. Our family's friendship with your family was such a treasure in our lives. Vera and I had fun together on occasional trips we made, and time spent together over the years at DSB. I can still hear Vera's wonderful voice and accent in my mind. And now Vera, you are in the arm of our Lord with His eternal blessings.
