Frances G. Bayard

Frances Gibson Bayard, 80 years old, of Wilmington, Delaware, died Sunday, February 15, 2026.

Raised in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, she graduated from Swarthmore High School. She received her undergraduate degree from Lake Forest College and her Ed.M. degree from Tufts University.

Her love of children and learning shaped her professional life. She began her career teaching kindergarten in Texas and later taught reading at Tower Hill School before working as a technical writer.

Her dedication to education and her passion for nature conservation were evident in her extensive volunteer service throughout the region.  She spent countless hours volunteering and teaching courses at the Delaware Nature Society’s Ashland Nature Center and Coverdale Farm Preserve. Over the past decade she was especially proud of her work with the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy.  She became a leader in conservation, working with the State of Maryland to support a strong farming community and to preserve the health of the land along Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Throughout her adult life, Christ Church Christiana Hundred has been a cherished community where she found strength, fellowship, and purpose. The church’s community was part of her daily life and over time she served on the vestry and numerous committees, as well as founding the grief support group. She was a deeply faithful woman whose quiet devotion and steady presence shaped her family and community alike.

Outside of church and conservation, one of her great passions was spending time in Weston, Vermont, which held a special place in her heart.  There she gathered with extended family across generations, creating lasting traditions and sharing her love of nature with her grandchildren.

Above all, Frances loved her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and the anchor across generations.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of forty-four years, James Asheton Bayard, Jr. She is survived by her daughters, Noël Bayard Morelli of Towson, Maryland, and Elise Bayard Franklin of Belmont, Massachusetts; their husbands, Thomas Morelli and Thomas Franklin; and her five cherished grandchildren. She is also survived by extended family members and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness and generosity.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 27 at 2:30 p.m. at Christ Church Christiana Hundred, Wilmington, Delaware. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a charitable donation in her memory to the Food Bank of Delaware at https://www.fbd.org or the Ministry of Caring at www.ministryofcaring.org\.

Elise and Noel, I am so sorry for the loss of your mother, Fran. Your mother was such a kind person and gentle figure. I had the fortune of having her as my reading teacher at Tower Hill. She had a way of nurturing young readers and listening to children’s thoughts and feedback about the books we read. In a time and setting where teachers could be imposing and punitive, she was kind, gentle, and respectful. I never was scared or dreaded going to her reading class. Over the years, I always enjoyed bumping into Fran somewhere in Wilmington or at ‘calling’. After my father’s death, your mother was extremely compassionate and a figure of support for my mother, welcoming my mother to the grief support group she facilitated at Christ’s Church. Her love and warmth were contagious and felt by all who knew her. That smile of hers was genuine and made others feel her joy. I wish I could have known her more closely and had a chance to share our love of gardening. I can only imagine the beauty of the gardens she grew. Fran was amazing and iconic. What an incredible woman and how lucky you are to call her “mom”. I know that magic lives on in you and her grandchildren. 💕 Giant hugs to all of you. Your cousin, Amanda Bayard

With deep sadness, I join the many at this Loss. She, the model of quiet elegance, was the epitome, as earlier that of Jim, such of being committed to Community matters and Our Progress, no matter at what level. Bravado talk mattered not----She acted. She was an essential cog forward. We shall miss her tremendously.

    Richmond Williams writes,
I first met Fran through Jim, her husband. After his passing, I had the privilege of knowing Fran on her own. She was so kind and thoughtful and was an amazing steward of the family farm outside of Cecilton, MD. Through this connection with her I also learned of her abiding love for her family. Her granddaughter's beautiful drawing of an eagle that adorned her refrigerator was the inspiration for the new sign for the farm. I will greatly miss Fran and the wonderful visits we had in Wilmington and on the farm.
