Alexandra Tsaganos passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, at home. She was born in 1937, in Monemvasia, Greece, to the late Georgios Ritsos and Panayiota (Giannoukos). Alexandra, the eldest of four daughters, was born into a prominent family, with the Ritsos surname well known among literary, political, and military circles. As a result of World War II and the Greek Civil War, the Ritsos family endured economic and personal hardships. Alexandra was taught from an early age to persevere through adversity, a quality that she would later instill into her children.
Alexandra and her family would later move to Athens, leaving behind her home in Monemvasia, which today has become a popular hotel that she had proudly visited, eliciting fond memories. She worked as a secretary in her uncle’s law firm until such time that she left to come to the United States at 21 years old, to visit her aunt and uncle in Marcus Hook, PA. She was introduced to the love of her life, George Tsaganos. They married on August 16, 1959, and enjoyed 61 beautiful years together until the passing of George on December 13, 2020. Alexandra made the United States her home, building strong bonds with her husband’s family, especially her sisters-in-law, Joanne (Anthony) and Joanna (Nicholas) Tsaganos. Throughout the years, she frequently visited Greece and would reminisce with such great joy, particularly about the time she spent with her sisters touring Europe.
Alexandra worked in the restaurant and alcohol beverage industry (The Embers, The Paper Plate, Peggy’s Subs, Kent Manor Inn, and Airport Liquors) alongside her husband; together they prospered and lived the American dream. Her most important job though was being a dedicated mother to Robert and Peggy, to whom she would endlessly recite Greek myths, fables, and sayings. She was always fiercely loyal to and protective of her children.
Alexandra also became very active in the women’s religious charity organization – St. Agape Philoptochos Chapter at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. She was very devoted to the organization’s mission and thoroughly enjoyed her time with the ladies as they participated in local and global philanthropy. She served in several capacities including president, treasurer, and board member for many years.
Alexandra carried herself with dignity, her wisdom often shared through thoughtful words and guidance. As anyone that knew her well would attest to her strong will, strict adherence to cultural and religious traditions, honesty, and perfectionism. She also had a humorous side and truly enjoyed a clever-witted joke. Her humor and the laughter she evoked will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her children, Robert and Peggy; her grandchildren, Bianca-Alexis Ferrante, Alexa Taylor (Anthony), George Tsaganos (Adrienne), Dimitrios Tsaganos; her cherished angels (great-grandchildren), Robert, Opheleia, Mateo, Phillip, and James; sisters, Marina Georgileas, Ioanna Petousis, Evdokia Koumbourlis; godson, Georgios Petousis; and many beloved nephews and nieces.
