Born in 1924, in Connellsville, PA, she was the only child of Anna ( Suanna) Cossel and Harry Lewis Shaffer, Lois grew up in the  Dormont area of Pittsburgh, PA.  She graduated from Grove City College in 1945. Lois was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, a member of Aldersgate Methodist Church, and served many years on the Christiana Care Junior Board. She enjoyed her home, garden, sewing, bridge clubs, and feeding the backyard birds.

She and Gordon traveled during their retirement years and moved to Maris Grove in 2006. Gordon passed away in 2008.

At Maris Grove Lois’s pastimes ranged from fitness, cribbage, and Spanish to Wii bowling and cardio drumming. She was an original member of the “Tuesday Tribe” dinner group and a whiz at Wordle and other games on her iPad.

Lois leaves loving daughters Dr Donna Sperber (Harry) and Sherle Schafer,  grandchildren Michael Sperber (Melissa) and Lauren Sperber (Jeremy Pharo), a great granddaughter Polaris Pharo, four nephews and a niece.  She will be remembered for her warm smile and will be sadly missed by her family and many friends.

I will always treasure my godmother’s smile, her tender and loving soul, and all the warmth a heart can hold. May she now rejoice in joining “Uncle Gordon” in heaven, and may she send blessings of love to her daughters and extended family. “Aunt Lodie” - I will miss you, but you will always be in my heart with joyous and everlasting memories.

Lisa and I were sad to learn of Lodi’s passing. Her presence in our family has been constant over many years as evidenced by the many pictures we have of the two family gatherings. Now, she has rejoined Gordon, Bob, and Jackie at the heavenly 19th hole table where memories were made and friendships grew out of love. Our prayers are with Sherle and Donna and the family. Rest in everlasting peace.

Aunt Lodie...so many loving memories. Her smile and laughter whenever we were together were outward expressions of her love for my brothers and me when we were growing up. The Schafers and Scheetzes were family to each other for well over 70 years. She even became Aunt Lodie to my own children, now grown. To Donna and Sherle, I grieve with you in the loss of a wonderful mother who shared her love with everyone she knew. Lodie blessed us all. And I pray she is at peace now and forever as Jesus welcomed her to her heavenly home, together with all those who have gone before her. Especially her dear, sweet Gordon. May God bless you and the rest of Lodie's family during this time.

Lois had such an easy-going demeanor and a ready smile for anyone. I remember delightful times with her when she visited her daughter and my dear friend, Sherle, when we lived in Kansas City. I know she will be missed by many. Rest in peace, sweet Lois in your heavenly home reunited with Gordon.

I will always remember Mrs. Schafer as a gentle, sweet mom who always had a smile for me. From my first sleepover for Sherle’s 6th birthday in Northwood to her dancing at my daughter’s wedding in Philadelphia at age 98, I will always look up to her as a wonderful role model who was an amazing mom to my friend, Sherle. Her life was full and the memories she made with her friends and family will live on for all of us.

Although we only met a couple of times, I feel as though I knew you through your daughter Sherle's writing and photos. You were always smiling in every picture I saw. God bless those you leave behind for you have left a great absence in the lives of all who loved you.

Sherle and Donna, I will always treasure your mom, her smile and her beauty. Her smile lit up the room and she was dressed beautifully. After seeing and visiting with her I always felt happier. Even these last few months and her move to different areas she continued to be upbeat. I treasure the last visit I had with her. Prayers for you both.

My heart goes out to Sherle and the whole family. Losing a loved one is always hard. Lois had a long and productive life. Whenever I saw Lois via Facebook, she had a smile on her face and was always ready for the next adventure.
