Eleanor S. Maroney

Baptized Eleanor Howland Silliman, Ellie died at 85 of cancer on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

The 3rd of 6 children born to Henry and Mariana Silliman, her earliest years were molded by World War II and her father’s service in the US Navy. Army, Navy, Air Corp, Marine anthems and other patriotic music were the background of life, just as rations were. Love of God, Country and Family were of supreme importance, and still are.

Ellie attended Wilmington Friends School, graduated from Chatham Hall and Vassar, then married Ron (Charles Ronald) Maroney in 1963. They lived briefly in Oklahoma City, then returned for good to Wilmington.

She is survived by her husband Ron and 3 children: Eileen (Rob Gooderham), Rod (Deb Lee), and Whit (Katharine Fisher), plus 1 fabulous granddaughter (Tatiana Eleanor Maroney), and 3 fabulous grandsons: Fin (Henry Fisher), Sam (Samuel Whitney) and Mills (George Mills) – Maroneys all.

It might be obvious I am writing my own obit, but that’s so I can put force behind my desire for NO funeral – a couple of prayers in private would be lovely! And in lieu of a funeral, please do something you love to do: a walk on a sunny day, a bridge or tennis game, shopping – anything legal! I hope with all my heart that friends and family know how much I love them.

Ellie personified a sweet, quiet but effective leader. She never sought the limelight but worked hard to contribute however she could. Her work with the Kennett Pike Association over many years made the Greenville-Centreville-Montchanin communities a better place to live. She will be sorely missed.

I am sorry for the family's loss. Although I never met her in person as I was her contact for her personal insurance. She was always kind and friendly to speak with.
