Jayashree Subramanyam

Mrs. Jayashree Subramanyam breathed her last peacefully in her sleep on August 25, 2025, in Bear, Delaware, USA, surrounded by her immediate family. She was 83 years old.

Jayashree was born in September of 1941, in Mysuru (Mysore), Karnataka, India, to parents M.P. Krishnaswamy, a respected advocate, and Lalitha, a devoted homemaker. She was the paternal granddaughter of M.S Puttanna, the eminent Kannada author credited with popularizing Kannada prose, and the maternal granddaughter of C. Narasimhaiah, a noted and renowned educationist, humanitarian, and philanthropist.

Jayashree spent her early years in Bengaluru (Bangalore) and held fond memories of her childhood there. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in History, Economics, and Political Science from the esteemed Mount Carmel College, Bangalore, an education that further enriched her lifelong love for language, culture, sports, and the arts. She later made her home in Krishnarajasagara (KRS), where she spent much of her adult life alongside her husband, Subramanyam, who retired as Principal and Executive Engineer of the Engineering Staff Training College, Karnataka Public Works Department (KPWD). KRS, with its quiet charm and deep cultural roots, became the backdrop for a life centered on family, music, and service.

Jayashree was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who lived with warmth, grace, and a boundless zest for life. Naughty and playful in her youth, she remained fiercely protective of her family, especially her younger sisters and her son, and was proud of her family. She was deeply committed to preserving and passing on her family’s traditions and values.

A devoted homemaker, Jayashree was also a gifted Carnatic classical vocalist. Trained under the esteemed Vidwan Seetharama Shastri, she performed for All India Radio and on prestigious stages across India. Her mellifluous music was not just a skill; it was her essence. She sang freely and joyfully, even at her own wedding reception, where she performed alongside her guru.

Jayashree was known for her storytelling, humor, and intelligence. She was a walking encyclopedia of old Mysore and Bangalore, especially its people, traditions, and local history. Every conversation with her brought vivid stories, insightful reflections, and often, joyful laughter. She had an extraordinary memory and an engaging style that turned everyday topics into compelling narratives.

She nurtured deep and lasting friendships over decades, maintaining connections across generations and continents. Her generosity was equally enduring, she supported many through challenging times, offering moral, spiritual, and even financial help when needed.

Friends and family alike recall her as a pillar of strength and kindness, someone who gave without hesitation.

Passionate about empowering others, Jayashree taught and guided homemakers and young people in acquiring skills such as tailoring, knitting, basket weaving, and cooking, encouraging self-reliance and confidence in those around her.

Rooted deeply in her Hindu Brahmin faith, Jayashree’s home was a place of love, culture, and spiritual warmth.

She is survived by her loving husband, Subramanyam; her son, Karthik Shrowthy; daughter-in-law, Ranjini Shrowthy; and grandson, Advaith Shrowthy. She also leaves behind her dear siblings: elder brother, Prabhakar M.K., and younger sisters, Jayanthi Vijayagopal and Jayagowri Shivakumar.

Jayashree’s life was a rich tapestry woven with love, laughter, music, wisdom, tradition, and service. She leaves behind a lasting legacy in the hearts of everyone she touched. Her voice, values, and vibrant spirit will continue to resonate through her family, friends, and the many lives she uplifted.

Jayagowri Shivakumar lit a candle and writes,
My eldest sister Jayashree was feisty, fun-loving, and with a fantastic sense of humour. Being the youngest of the siblings and fourteen years her junior, had its advantages for me. I could get her into embarrassing situations, I could say whatever I wanted to in all my naivety and could be honourably pardoned by her. Perhaps, Jayashree forgave many of my misdeeds because she could weave a story round it when she recounted such incidents to her friends. My antics were fodder for the captivating story- teller that she was. I was the butt of ridicule, a person who left her red- faced as I stumbled through life. She often swore that she wouldn't take me to her friend's house but ending up taking me everywhere nevertheless. I was very loyal to her and unfailing landed her in a series of awkward situations that were viewed with good humour and a twinkle in her eye. I am sure she is laughing wherever she is;listening to this note and saying God bless you. Rest in peace dear sister after a long battle to live life to its fullest and fearless best. Rest in peace

Jayanthi Vijaygopal lit a candle and writes,
“Jai” and “Jaishe” was how my father used to call my beloved elder sister Jayashree, who was not only my elder sister, but who also was my friend, guide and my first music teacher. Young Jayashree was a girl of many distinctions, one of which was performing a long jump at school in a long skirt! An eight-year-old Jayashree came home from school once and told my mother that her head master had asked all students to come in neat clothes the following day. My mother, who always wanted her children well turned out, dressed Jayashree in a nice contrast border long silk skirt and blouse. Jayashree went to school and found out that it was Sports Day! Her headmaster asked her, “How will you participate wearing this dress?”. Jayshree would have none of it, and being a go-getter, she jumped long enough wearing the long skirt to win the first place in the long jump competition. She later went on to become an accomplished kho-kho player, and I recall seeing her run like a deer to chase her opponents down during kho-kho matches. Her other talents included singing, embroidery and cooking. She learnt embroidery from my father, who also often accompanied her on the harmonium when she sang during family functions. Since I was a good ten years younger than her, my mother told Jayashree to preserve her dresses neatly so that her younger sister Jayanthi (me) could wear them. Jayashree showed her sibling rivalry and bluntly retorted, “I will wear and tear all my clothes and will leave nothing for her!” Years later, the same Jayashree joined a tailoring class, and saw to it that both Jayagowri (our sister who was four years my junior) and me had dresses (frocks, skirts and shirts) of the latest styles to wear, sibling rivalry be damned! Always smartly dressed with two thick plaits hanging down either side, Jayashree would go wearing her high-heeled sandals to Mount Carmel College, from where she completed her graduation. Upon her return from college, my younger sister Jayagowri, who would eagerly be waiting for Jayashree, would get into her high-heeled sandals and walk around the house, falling all the time! Jayashree loved cooking and experimenting with new recipes. She avidly listened to the “Hosa Ruchi” cookery programme on All India Radio (AIR) Bengaluru and noted down the recipes discussed. Both Jayagowri and me would then get to taste her cooking upon our return from school. She made particularly good Aloo Tikkis. We witnessed the best of this whenever our brother Prabhakar used to come home from Mumbai (where he was based then) on vacation. She and my mother would together prepare his favourite dishes while Jayagowri and me enjoyed the pedas and halwa he had brought for us. Another fun moment was when the family got together to play Pagade (Ludo) or Chowka Bara. There would be shouting, screaming and a lot of fun between us family members. Her young son, Karthik, would join in, but would be “aatake untu lekhakke illa”. Jayashree’s sense of humour ensured all ended well. Another trait of hers were her “green fingers”. She loved growing and tending to plants and trees, and had a nice garden in the compound of her home, which comprised of different trees such as jackfruit, mango, guava, curry leaves, rose and hibiscus. All of these trees made her home a heavenly place to live in. On her last trip to Bengaluru this year before she returned to the USA, she made it a point to go around her garden, hugging and talking to all the trees and thanking them for having made her home a good place to live in for all these years. She went into her prayer room and thanked the supreme lord, saying, “A big thank you! If I am alive when our family comes back next, I will see you then!” She departed for her heavenly abode a few days after arriving in the USA. That’s something I had never heard of or experienced before. Today, I am sure she is happy wherever she is and I pray that her soul rests in peace - Jayanthi Vijaygopal
