Helen Frances Pierson Houchin

Helen Frances Pierson Houchin, a long time resident of Hockessin, Delaware, made her transition on January 10, 2018. She was in her home, happy and healthy, with some of her family by her side, anticipating celebrating her birthday in a few days.

Helen was born in Marshallton, Delaware in 1921, on the Klair family farm, to Kemper Bryant Pierson and Sarah Edith Klair Pierson. She had one older sister, Eudora Louisa Pierson Elliott, formerly of Wilmington. She attended a private elementary school, A.I. DuPont Jr. and Sr. High Schools, and was Valedictorian in the 2nd graduating class of Conrad High School. She received a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Delaware in 1941.

It was while in college that she met her soul mate and forever love, George Arthur Houchin of Philadelphia. They were married in November 1942, when George was home on leave from the U.S. Naval Officer Flight Training school in Pensacola, FL. After a few war time dictated moves, and the war behind them, George and Helen settled in northwest Wilmington, not far from her home, on Millcreek Road.  In 1955, they moved to their forever home on Graves Road in Hockessin. There they raised their family of four daughters, Patricia Helen Houchin Pigford, Barbara Louise Houchin Bowman, Kristen Rae Houchin, and Jennifer Kay Houchin Kyle.

Helen’s family was her life. She and George provided the most nurturing, wholesome, and inclusive home where their children and their friends always felt loved and welcome.  A plethora of activity and energy surrounded her home and she thrived amidst it. Helen loved the outdoors, animals, music, laughter and the color red. She taught us to be kind to one another, to see the humor in life, and to always look for the rainbow.  She and George truly gave us all, roots and wings.

Helen was a lifelong member of Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church and was the oldest surviving member. She was a very active participant in the church and served both on the Board of Deacons, and as a Stephen Minister. She was also active in the D.A.R. and the Girl Scout organizations.

Helen is now reunited with her husband George, her daughter Barbara, and her sister Eudora. She leaves her other three daughters, eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and numerous other cousins and relatives to celebrate her legacy, and to ever expand her attributes of strength, love, and kindness.

A Memorial Service in Celebration of Helen’s Life will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018, at 12:00 PM, at Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, 500 McKennan’s Church Road, Wilmington, DE. I so remember how welcoming your mom was. Reguardless of whether I was invited to your birthday party, or just dropping in to skate on your frozen pond in winter, she was gracious and always smiling. I think of my own mom every day, and I am sure you will, as well. Condolences.

We have wonderful memories of the Houchin family. Barbara was our dear friend who introduced us to the "clan"! Fishing and picnics by their pond will always be cherished memories. We were always so impressed that Helen was a math major! Quite an accomplishment for a woman of that generation and she inspired her daughters to be strong independent women. She will be missed. We send our deepest condolences to your family. Gary and Robey Gredell

When I was a teenager, Helen was my idol. When I married in 1950, Patsy and Barbara were my flower girls. Helen has always been so friendly, sweet and kind. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

Mrs. Houchin exemplified the words "caring" and "generosity" and was an amazing role model for those of us growing up on Graves Road. Thank you for sharing her with us!!

    Barbara Rowe writes,
Have just heard the news of your mother's passing, Patsy, Kristin and Jennifer, and send my deepest sympathies to you all, and to your extended family. Your mom figures prominently in my own childhood and teenage memories, along with all of you and your dad, and Barbara, of course, and your house and the pond on Graves Road. Your family was filled with love and laughter and your beloved mom was at the heart of it. I know this loss will affect you all very deeply. I regret not being able to attend the memorial service and share my sympathy for you all in person. You are all now, and will remain, in my thoughts and in my heart.
