Dr. Curtis Jack Orr, Jr.

Dr. Curtis Jack Orr, Jr. (Jack) was born in Dover, Pennsylvania in July of 1941. Jack was a thoughtful speaker and minister, a compelling consultant, a devoted professor and a loving husband, father, and grandfather. A man of great scholarly competence, Jack earned his Ph.D. in Communication from Temple University and an M.A. in Philosophy from Northwestern University.

Jack dedicated his life to helping others grow—professionally, personally, and spiritually—through the power of effective communication and principled leadership. Jack spent the early part of his career in the role of minister at Baptist Church of the Evangel in Narberth, PA, and Second Baptist Church (Presently Silverside Church) of Wilmington, DE.

As a trusted consultant and facilitator, his guidance supported countless organizations. The founder and Director of C. J. Orr & Associates for over 44 years, Jack was a sought-after advisor to organizations across industries—from healthcare and finance to education and the arts. His client list was extensive and impressive, with the likes of Aetna, Merrill Lynch, DuPont, Wyeth-Ayerst, QVC, ING, the United States Postal Service, and the Chamber of Commerce of the United States. Jack also served as a consultant for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for Organizational Management for 25 years, guiding leadership development programs at prestigious universities including Notre Dame, Southern Methodist, San Jose State, and the University of Delaware.

As a university professor, Jack taught with passion and depth through courses in interpersonal communication, persuasion, creativity, process thinking, inspirational leadership, and organizational development.  Jack held academic appointments at several institutions, including the University of Delaware and Hope College, before dedicating nearly forty years to West Chester University of Pennsylvania, where he ultimately retired as Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies. His aspirations of teaching young minds to think critically, lead effectively, and act with integrity would affect generations to come.

Jack’s work was grounded in a mission larger than business success; he believed in helping people develop not only economically, but also socially and spiritually. His life’s work was centered on empowering others to think differently about problems and possibilities, always aiming to uplift and inspire. Outside of work, Jack would enjoy summers at Bethany Beach with his family in a home made possible by his hard work. Beach outings, nights spent playing card games and fishing trips at the nearby pond are just a fraction of the fond memories he leaves behind for his children and grandchildren.

Jack was preceded in death by his loving wife, Rebecca Lynn Orr. Jack is survived by his children Christopher Jon Orr, husband of Carolyn June Orr née Snelling and Caitlyn Elizabeth Orr Martin, partner of Andrew Larkin.  He was the paternal grandfather of Samantha June Orr Gabe, wife of Conner Gabe, and Alexander Christopher Orr.  Jack was the maternal grandfather to Anneliese Janene Martin.

A memorial to honor the life of Jack will be held on June 21, 2025, at West Chester University, Phillips Memorial Building 664 S. High Street West Chester, PA 19383. The service will be held at 1:00 p.m.

    Leslie G. Desmangles, Ph.D. writes,
Jack and I were fellow graduate students at the Temple University. Although we were not in the same academic programs, we often saw each other and spent quality time together. I remember these days with affection and always appreciated his mild-mannered way. I am so sorry to learn of his passing, I send my deepest condolences to all the members of his family and loved ones. I knew Jack as a hard worker who applied himself wholly to all that he undertook. To those of us who give serious consideration to teaching and scholarship; to those of us who yearned for the discipline needed to listen and share our thoughts closely, Jack extended his immaculately tailored sleeve and opened his arms to others for decades as a teacher and consultant. His gift of guidance brought many to make the best decisions in their lives. To borrow from Psalm 15, Jack was one who "deserved to dwell near the heart of the tabernacle, on the holy mountain; he walked uprightly and worked righteously; he spoke the truth in his heart.” Leslie G. Desmangles, Ph.D. Professor of Religious Studies Trinity College Hartford CT 06106

Jack and I used to walk back to our cars at 10 pm after teaching in Main Hall. I was a new adjunct then but he was always friendly and kind. He was always very helpful and supportive, and I will always treasure those walks and conversations.

Jack treated students with respect and kindness. Some of my favorite WCU memories include Jack Orr. We stayed in touch after graduation and for a few years, I returned each spring to talk to his class of seniors about what you could do with a communications degree. I still remember the joy that always accompanied him when teaching or in conversation. Those of us who were his students were very fortunate to experience his gift for teaching, his caring heart, and gentle soul.

Chris and Caitlyn, our hearts go out to you and your families. We have always held Dr. Orr in the highest regards - as a pastor during my youth and as an adult education leader later on in life. Memories of playing tennis and driving around in buttercup and mule are rich in my mind and your dad (and mom) was always so welcoming. Prayers of comfort to you and yours during this time of loss.

This loss will be so deeply felt by so many of us who worked with Jack. He and I were colleagues for over 20 years. In all that time everyone in our department looked up to him as a voice of reason, a voice of wisdom, and most of all as a voice of encouragement. Jack always had time to inquire how you were doing, to listen when you needed to talk, to counsel when you needed advice. He was a gentle and kind spirit and model for a life well lived.

    Kevin Dean writes,
A lump came to my throat when I received word of Jack’s passing; Chris and Caitlyn, know that many feel your loss and give you thanks for sharing your wonderful dad with us. Having know him as a colleague and friend for over two decades, the two images that come to mind are kind and calm. When I began at West Chester I coached the forensics team. Jack was always among the first to ask “how’d we do this weekend” and often he would follow up by finding students to say, “hey we are proud of you”. When my daughter was born in 1992, he and Rebecca’s got her a plush stuffed cat, “Pink Kitty”soon became the prized “comfort object” that went everywhere with us and still resides in her bedroom. Jack learned about the attraction and over the years would ask, “is Pink Kitty still doing the job?” It was his thoughtful and selfless attention to others that earned him so much respect and trust. Jack was also one of the calmest academics I knew. In the face of drama Jack remained relaxed and affirming of those around him. He brought that to his teaching as evidenced from the last honors course he taught before he retired. Drawing from NPR he had students read Emerson (clearly one of his favorites) and then draft “this I believe statements.” Students praised the experience, sharing how he gave them space in their often frenetic lives to take a moment to breathe and calmly reflect on what truly mattered in life. Praying you and your families find calm in the richness of so many great memories. Kevin & Kenda (Shannon & Pink Kitty)

I remember being one of Jack's students in his class when he was a young professor at the University of Delaware. He was a remarkably gifted and positive teacher. More than fifty years have passed, but I'm glad to know that so many others continued to share his benevolence and knowledge. Rest in peace, Jack.

Truly more than a professor, Dr. Orr was a coach and mentor to me and so many others. I am working in the Leadership and Org. Development field due to his influence. Not only did I learn the theory, but also I learned I must work on myself as a practitioner and commit to my own growth. There was wisdom shared in every interaction with Dr. Orr. While this loss is felt, his legacy burns bright.

Dr. Orr had a proud effect on my life when I started at WCU at age 17. He advised me through my Master’s Degree and continued to stay in touch with me for decades after I graduated. I owe him a huge debt of gratitude for his calming presence in my life. His legacy forever lives on in so many of us. My deepest condolences for this immense loss. “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
