Barton Huntington Miller

Barton Huntington Miller died at 89 on April 20, 2025 Easter Day, peacefully in his sleep after a lengthy illness. Known to all as Bart, he lived a wonderful life filled with family, friends, dogs, travel, and the outdoors. After graduating from the Westminster School, he entered Yale. He soon joined and sang for the Whiffenpoofs which was the beginning of a lifelong love of music and singing. It was not long before he met Marnie Becker who was attending Connecticut College. The two married their senior year and spent their honeymoon traveling through Europe with his fellow Whiffenpoofs.  Bart had a career in banking, starting in New Haven and New York, and later wealth management at Alex. Brown and Sons in Wilmington, Delaware.

After retirement, they moved to his family farm in Lee, Massachusetts. They continued to travel together to far-flung corners of the world. Bart always had a fly rod in his hand, the lighter the better, and a cuban cigar discretely tucked into his pocket. To avoid the cold Berkshire winters, they spent many of them in New Zealand, fishing and hiking as they drove from one end of the islands to the other. Other notable destinations included family safaris to Africa, fishing in Scotland, driving across America, bush flying in Quebec and Labrador, and hiking in South America. His favorite fishing was in the canyons of the Smith River in Montana. Bart’s love of the arts and music continued to flourish while singing with his 1958 Whiffenpoofs and spending Sunday afternoons perched in a folding chair, New York Times in hand, listening to the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood.

Bart’s greatest joy was his family. He taught his two daughters Martha and Perry to bird watch, fish, hunt, golf and to love and respect the great outdoors. Later, the arrival of four grandsons provided him with the opportunity to share that passion with them as well. His grandsons often sought his wise counsel when it came to fishing, sport, education, career and love.

Bart served on numerous boards and served others with great joy. He spent several decades working with the mentally disadvantaged at Gould Farm in Massachusetts. He had a tremendous impact on many young people in the Berkshires where he often introduced them to fishing and nature.

Barton Huntington Miller was born in 1936, to Imogene Perkins Miller and Robbins Huntington Miller in New Haven. He attended the Westminster School and Yale University. He served as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps. He is survived by his wife Marnie to whom he was married 67 years, his daughters Perry and Martha, and his four grandsons. He was predeceased by his brother Timothy Miller. Services will be private, and in lieu of flowers gifts can be made in his name to Trout Unlimited (tu.orgDONATE).

    Cynthia Heldt writes,
Dear Marnie, Perry and Martha and family, I am sorry for your loss of your Dad and beloved Bart. He was the kind of person I wished I had gone to college with- reflective, proud of his work for others, self deprecating, well travelled and well spoken. Willing to struggle with personal demons and keep them at bay. A lover of the arts and the outside. He loved watching the birds from his living room. He told me a story about his friends getting together from the Whiffenpoofs saying- "I think we are all getting older". Someone's phone was lost- they called it and it was in someone else's pocket, but no one could hear well enough to find it! I admired your forever love and devotion, despite the ravages that time visits upon us. As Paul wrote- "I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have keep the faith." Christ's peace be with you all. Cindy Heldt MD

My sincerest condolences to you all. I have so many fond memories working alongside Bart through the Gould Farm Board of Directors. And through my mother Jackie Hawkins who catered many parties for you. He loved to talk with me about his grandchildren and their many adventures together. He was a kindred spirit that will be greatly missed. My love to you Marnie. 🩷

I remember Bart in connection with Gould Farm in Monterey, MA. He was a member of the Board of Directors there. Bart was a kind, generous man. At one point, when I was a guest at the Farm. I wanted to try new volunteer opportunities but had no transportation, Bart drove me around. Not one of the duties of a board member, but he was happy to do it. We were lucky to have him.

Dear Marnie, Bart was a volunteer helper to me while I was the Transition Counselor at Gould Farm. His love of everyone at the Farm permeated his interactions with each person. He had a habit of saying his own name when greeting someone so that they would say theirs, it was touchingly sweet and saved him having to remember each new person's name. On the Forestry and Grounds team Bart shared in the accomplishments and struggles of those in treatment with infinite compassion. His smiles and laughter gave me joy on many a day. When my daughter was struggling to find a place for her wedding, Bart suggested the Lenox club; an impossible choice without Bart's connections. That's the kind of person Bart was - magnanimous, kind, open. I am so grateful to have known this wonderful man who also pushed me to realize a dream I had for many years: traveling to the Galapagos, where he had taken his family. Lastly, Bart’s willingness to share his recovery, helped those in treatment at the Farm to have the courage to seek their own. Thank you, Marnie, for sticking by Bart and for encouraging him to volunteer at the Farm. He was truly a gift.

Dear Marnie and family, I just heard this morning at the Monterey UCC church that Bart had passed away. During the service I had been gazing through the window where Bart customarily sat, as I watched the newly grown maple leaves move in the breeze against the deep blue sky. I am sorry for your loss and perhaps feel an even greater empathy having experienced my own loss of Bart's presence with us here in the Berkshires these past years. I can't tell you how many times I have thought of Bart while going about my daily routines. So many different ways in which Bart enhanced and supported the Gould Farm mission including personal kindnesses and camaraderie with me. I have long missed seeing him pulling into our parking lot, greeting and entering into spirited and kindred conversations with him. Even now as I sit typing at my office window I can see the burgeoning blooms of the purple lilac we planted together. Whether I drive past the old family farm on Spring St, have a philosophical query, want to know the source of a tune, or just want an extra dose of gratitude, I think of Bart and remember you both very fondly. I am so happy to have experienced Bart and your friendship. Deep condolences to you and the whole family in the context of many happy memories.

    Fritz Kinzel writes,
Bart was a much loved singer in the '58 Yale Whiffenpoofs, which I led. When gathering them for a concert was like herding cats, he had one of the loudest whistles known to mankind. It always worked! He was far and away our best athlete. We beat the Tigertones at Princeton in touch football by 54 to 0 due to his superb quarterbacking. He had a big heart, especially showing real kindness and acceptance of those with mental illness at Gould Farm. Bart and Marnie were wonderful hosts for us singers over the years at their beautiful home in Lee. Both were so generous. He had a big role in us all loving each other, which people told me they could hear in our blend. Much to savor about him. My condolences.
