Carolyn Patterson Eaton

Carolyn Eaton, a loving wife and a friend to every dog she met, peacefully completed life’s puzzle on March 19, 2025, at the age of 74. The daughter of George and Juliet Patterson, Carolyn’s greatest pride was the family she built, including her husband, Mike, her sister, Juliet, her children, Elizabeth and Jonathan, and her four wonderful grandchildren, Abigail, Violet, Byron, and Orson.

A student of the world, Carolyn, was most interested in the people she loved. She remembered every friend’s birthday, phone number, and even their pets’ birthdays. Her care extended beyond her inner circle to her environmental education work with the Brandywine Valley Association as well as volunteer work with Connecting Generations and the Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution, where she dedicated herself to lifting others up.

Carolyn’s care for children was manifested through acceptance, empathy, and a love of the underdog. This gift made her a humble mother and mentor to many and a friend across generations.

A nature-lover, “Carrot” tended to her gardens the way she tended to life—with generosity, haphazard experimentation, and the occasional plastic pink flamingo. Whether sharing her garden’s bounty, meeting friends for a walk through nature, or anticipating the next holiday decorations, she lived each day with pride and a loving spirit.

Though she has moved beyond this world, we take comfort in knowing that wherever she is now, there are more birdfeeders to fill, twinkle lights to hang, and tomatoes to juice. With her passing, many remaining friends and family members will be unable to achieve their own afterlife goals: to be reincarnated as one of Carolyn’s dogs.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to any charity that believes in equality, love, and dogs sleeping in beds.

In my heart, I never will say goodbye to Carolyn. The wonderful home that she and Mike opened to so many friends was always a sanctuary for me. If mom knew I was going over for a visit, she never worried if I didn’t make it home that night. I know she will light the way for those of us who must still travel that way.

Thank you Carolyn (and Mike) for taking me and Erica into your home back in October 1998, U Haul, Nissan Sentra in tow, and Pippi our cat. You let us stay in your home, fed us, and took us around Wilmington until we found an apartment to live in. I will be forever grateful for the hospitality, love, and friendship Carolyn showed us then and continued to. I will miss that smile and her great stories. Peace

Ditto to everything Marc said. I send these condolences with much love and hope that you can find peace and comfort in the happiest memories of Carolyn. My memory is that Carolyn shone as a beacon of light, love and generosity well beyond the average human capacity or inclination. She embodied unconditional love with her open-hearted vibrancy, passion for life’s experiences, and her inspired and uncompromising commitment to care for those she loved. She also made the absolute best chicken noodle soup I’ve tasted to this day, and I remember it every time I get a cold or flu. She has a beautiful soul, and I feel genuinely privileged to have been the recipient of some of the many kindnesses she gifted in this life. Though I know this loss is painfully felt, I feel just as assured that wherever she has landed in the cosmos, she has been eagerly welcomed by the beloved spirits of many long lost pets, Roxy, Russell and other ancestral family and friends. They are grateful to now enjoy for eternity the company of Carolyn’s ebullient spirit, and the same bountiful, loving ministrations she lavished so expertly to us here on earth. I’d like to think the rest of us will be that lucky again someday, too.

Carrot was my best friend at Camp Asquam. We spent many years together as campers and counselors, always “pushing the buttons” and enjoying every moment life gave us together. I lost touch with her after camp but will always treasure those years we spent on Squam Lake. I’m a dog lover too. No wonder we liked each other from the get go. I hope you find peace wherever you may be. xx Pootah

    Meg Simonds writes,
OH NO! I had no idea! We have been buddies since meeting as counselors at Camp Asquam in the late 70's, and became roommates for a few years in Boston. One thing I can say for sure was we avoided trouble, barely, and had a BLAST. While we didn't see each other very often as adults in my mind she was never far away. Condolences, love, and big hugs to Mike, my Goddaughter Elizabeth, and Johnathan. Such a loss.

Every time I was with Carolyn, it was an adventure full of laughs, no judgement, pure joy being together - whether teaching classes at the BVA, scooping frogs out of the pool, or our last time together , sharing tea at Janssen's. Mike, Liz, and Jon - you were blessed to have had such an amazing wife/mother, and I, to have had her as a friend.

Barbara and Pete Johnson lit a candle and writes,
Carolyn had a generosity of spirit which touched everyone she knew. She was so self sacrificing that you had to be careful what you asked from her, because there was nothing she wouldn’t do for you. Her love of children and animals was legendary. Once in the middle of Mike’s birthday dinner she excused herself to help a neighbor load their sick donkey onto a trailer, missing her meal and the celebration entirely. She was so forgiving that she would interrupt any apology to say, “apology accepted.” When we asked our grown daughter about her favorite memory of Carolyn, she replied “ice cream.” Carolyn would lavish huge desserts on our children, without the requirement of eating dinner first. She set the example of being one of the kindest people we ever knew. We will miss her. Our love and condolences to the family. Pete and Barbara Johnson

Connie Nye (Shapiro) lit a candle and writes,
Ah Carolyn! I have so many fond memories, but mostly of chaotic joy and laughter. I remember joyfullly her multi-colored candles on the dinner table, her passion for creating accurate lessons of the Lenape, our laughter at champagne parties at BVA, and her hospitality at the cabin (NC?) where Ellen Makowski discovered the upside of hot flashes (keeping her warm). She took care of my baby Sydney 32 years ago by driving her up and down "Eaton Run" when Sydney wouldn't stop crying under her care. She was an inspiring spirit and such a generous soul. Though we drifted apart, I will always think fondly of all the Eatons. Mike, Liz and John: I send my love, hugs, and wishes for your best of memories. Please pass on her stories to her grandkids who any grandchild would have been so proud to have!
