Dorothy Elizabeth (Libby) Fay

Dorothy Elizabeth Fay (Libby) of Sharpley, Wilmington, passed away quietly on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 in the Wilmington Hospital at the age of 95.

She was born in 1921 in Sewickley, PA to David L. See and Margaret (McClure) See. She received a B.S. from Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University) and was an analytic chemist at the Mellon Institute in Pittsburgh and at DuPont in Fairfield, CT.

She was married to Robert E. Fay, Jr. from 1946 until his death in 1993. In addition to Wilmington, the couple lived in Fairfield CT, Cornwall NY, and Nashville TN. She is survived by their three sons Robert E., III (Meredith), David Kevin, and William Thomas (Jean).

In Cornwall, she was active in the Association for Retarded Citizens and helped the organization to start a school for retarded children with rented space in a church; for several years she put out the association newsletter with help of her family. The school became a model for the county to start a public school, which then became a model for other schools in the state.

In Nashville she was active in church, garden clubs, and other activities with friends.

In Wilmington, she returned to her early interest in golf, which she could then share with her husband. She was proud of housing 7 golfers of the LPGA during years when the McDonald’s Golf Tournament was in Wilmington. She was active member of Concord Presbyterian Church and the Timberlane Garden Club in Wilmington.

In addition to her sons and daughters-in-law, her survivors include her sister, Margie Richards, 5 grandchildren, Andrew, Jeaneane, Carolyn, Mary and William, several loving nieces and nephews, and 3 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Food Bank of Delaware, 14 Garfield Way, Newark, DE 19713.
